Are you one of those jewelry lovers whose heart skip a beat every time you see a shiny ring studded with gems? Or gape at necklaces with dainty precious stone pendants? If yes, then you are also a person who is in love with diamonds. Diamonds are common gem choices for weddings and gifts for engagements because they symbolize eternal love. However, these precious gems are very expensive so not everybody is fortunate enough to have even just one piece of them. The fortunate ones, however, must take care of them because these are such valuable items. Diamonds need to be constantly cleaned especially when they are settled on a ring or on a pendant. The ring becomes more vulnerable once they become part of a jewelry piece. Moreover, being the hardest gemstone known, diamond pieces should also be kept and stored away from other pieces of accessories because they can easily scratch other jewelries that are made of less durable materials like gold and silver.

Diamond pieces should be kept in individual containers because a diamond can also scratch another diamond piece and cause drastic scarring effects on their value, appearance, and clarity. Clarity is a criterion which is used to describe the inclusions of a diamond. Once a diamond piece already has scratches and other external blemishes, its value is dramatically reduced. Moreover, diamond accessories can be chipped accidentally during polishing and cutting. Thus, it is important to carefully handle diamond jewelries so that they will not lose their economic values.

Another thing to remember to care for your diamond is avoid wearing them while engaging on sports or other tough activities. Do not also wear these pieces when washing dishes or tending the garden. This is because the mounting of these gems can loosen when they become wet with harsh detergents.

For diamond jewelries bought at designer accessory stores, they usually come with cleaning manuals so cleaning the piece won’t be much of a problem. The usual contents of the manual discuss the step by step methods on using the cleaning solutions and other materials to goes with it. The most common type of cleaning solutions used for diamond jewelries is those which are oil based like mild soaps. Using these elements when cleaning should be done properly because thin layers of film from the cleaning solutions may still stay on the surface of the diamond and this mars the clarity of the gem.

To clean diamond accessories while keeping their brilliance, using elements like bath soap, cold water soak, and ultrasonic cleaner are the best. Detergent baths are dissolved in lukewarm water and the diamond is soaked in it to loosen the grime. After few minutes of soaking the diamond will then be soaked into a cold water soak and then to a solution of household ammonia mixed with cold water. Ultrasonic cleaning, on the other hand, is done usually on shops and personnel use a machine that gives off high ultrasonic sound wave while the diamond accessory is soaked in mild detergent with water. In cleaning diamond pieces at home, soft bristled toothbrushes should be used in removing the grime then properly dry it with a clean lint free cotton cloth.
