Are Buffets Profitable for Restaurants?

by Patricia Farnham

There are plenty of things you can offer your customers with a buffet style of restaurant. Chances are you will have a number of people that come in on a regular basis. They love the convenience of a buffet and being able to eat as soon as they walk in. They can also control the portion sizes of what they want to eat, not take what you bring out to them on a plate.

It is important to offer the very best foods to your customers for a buffet. They will be looking for homemade mashed potatoes and fresh baked bread. If you take short cuts to save time and money on such items chances are they won’t be coming back. Why should they pay money for food that isn’t exceptional? You also need to make sure the food on display is fresh and that there is plenty to choose from.

All it takes is getting a customer into your buffet restaurant one time for them to decide if they are going to come back or not. You need to do all you can to make sure they will be returning in the future. One way to do this is to ensure they can afford to come in and eat at your restaurant. Make sure the foods you offer are also comparable to the amount you are charging as they want to feel they got a good buy for their money.

It is offer different prices for our buffet meals. Breakfast and lunch prices should be less than for dinner. The weekend prices may be higher depending on if you serve anything special then or not. You need to give parents a break for children as well. Generally, you can charge a set price for certain age groups that is much lower than an adult meal price.

While you won’t need as much staff in order to operate a buffet restaurant, you will need to hire good quality help. You will need people to prepare the food and to put it on the buffet. You will also need people to keep up with the pile of dirty dishes that will mount up and to clear off plates from the tables. Guests should have all the assistance they need during the meal from your staff.

It does cost plenty of money to set up and operate a successful buffet restaurant, that is for sure. Yet if you go about it correctly you will be able to make much more money than you spend. Don’t be afraid that your guests are going to eat more than they pay for it as that rarely happens. It is somewhat of a trick I guess you would say though as many of them think they definitely ate more than what they paid for.

Consider buying the supplies to make the food in bulk. This is a great way to save money on items you will need to buy anyway. Take the time to compare prices too and if you need to work with more than one vendor. This way you can get the quality products you want to buy at the very best price offered.

Of course the amount of overhead expenses you have including your building, wages for the staff, utilities, and the cost of supplies will all have to be taken into consideration. Do your best to keep these types of cost low. That way you will have more profits coming in that will stay in your pocket. You can rely on this income later to make changes to improve your buffet restaurant business.
