Credit For Your Kindness: Car Donations

Friday, December 21st, 2007
by Michael Trusthold

Looking for a way to support your favorite charity? That used car in your driveway could be a big help to the group, and you might end up with a little money in your pocket. Generous donations of this type are recognized with special tax deductions, but certain requirements can apply.

There are policies regarding vehicle donations that may not be as straightforward as with other charitable contributions. The amount of tax relief you can receive is dependant on the value of your donation, and how the charity intends to use the vehicle. You may not even be aware of your full tax deduction amount at the time that your donation is made.

Since 2005, changes have been made to the statutes for tax deductions applied to vehicles donated to charitable trusts. If the declared value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, and the vehicle is placed for sale by the charitable trust, the taxpayer is limited to claiming the gross profits from the transaction.

Taxpayers wishing to benefit from such a charitable donation need to keep the following points in mind:

Itemized Deductions

You must itemize your deductions in order to take full advantage of tax relief available to you. If you are claiming standard education, you will not benefit from this clause.

Claiming Fair Market Value

When filing your tax return, be sure to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. This amount will take into consideration the condition of the donated vehicle. Claiming the full value of the car is not acceptable.

Estimate the Fair Market Value

When determining the value of your car, there are various factors to consider. You can use an up-to-date used car guide for fairly precise instructions to evaluate your vehicle’s value. Some adjustments may be needed to reflect the accessories, mileage and other indicators of the general condition of the vehicle.

Check Your Charitable

The charitable trust must qualify with the tax department in order for you to receive a tax benefit. A good place to find a complete list of recognized charities on with Publication 78, available online and in public libraries.

Filing Your Charitable Contribution

When claiming a tax deduction for your vehicle donation, it is essential to keep good records. Be sure to keep and record all receipts and forms related to the car donation, and its fair market value.

If you’ve donated a vehicle in the USA and want to know if your contribution is tax deductible, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. If you are concerned that contributions have been sought for deceitful purposes, contact the appropriate state charity official, located in the state Attorney General’s office.

Donating a spare vehicle is a very generous way to benefit your favorite registered charity. The organization will thank you, and the taxman will, too.

Thursday, December 6th, 2007
by Chris Roberts

In this 3rd installation in a series about The Top 10 Cars in metropolitan areas by Internet searches, I take a look at Chicago. You will find many of the same cars as you have seen in Los Angeles and Houston. However, the order has changed slightly. If your car is in the top 10, chances are that you are making a wise car-buying decision.

Here are the top searched for cars in Chicago: 1. Chicago Chevrolet, 2. Chicago Ford, 3. Chicago Toyota, 4. Chicago BMW, 5. Chicago Nissan, 6. Chicago Mercedes Benz, 7. Chicago Dodge, 8. Chicago Honda, 9. Chicago Cadillac, and 10. Chicago Pontiac.

1. Chevrolet Chicago

Like in Houston, Chevrolet Chicago tops the list of Chicago cars. A little more than 340,000 people searched for Chevrolet Chicago. This is more than what was searched in either Los Angeles or Houston.

2. Chicago Ford

Following the trend of Houston, Ford Chicago comes in second. Approximately 247,000 people searched for Ford Chicago. Again, this is more than both Ford Los Angeles and Ford Houston.

3. Chicago Toyota

Toyota also follows the search pattern found in Houston. About 163,000 searches were performed for Toyota Chicago. This is more than Toyota Houston but less than Toyota Los Angeles.

4. Chicago BMW

Number four is BMW Chicago. Just like Toyota Chicago, there were fewer searches for BMW Chicago than BMW Los Angeles. But there more searches for Toyota Chicago than for BMW Houston. Just a little more than 154,000 searches were registered for Toyota Chicago.

5. Nissan Chicago

Coming in fifth is Nissan Chicago. This is better than both Nissan Los Angeles and Nissan Houston. Nearly 132,000 cyber tire kickers checked the Internet for Nissan Chicago.

6. Chicago Mercedes Benz

Sixth is Mercedes Benz Chicago. This ties Mercedes Benz Los Angeles, although in raw numbers Los Angeles wins. On the other hand, Mercedes Benz Chicago beat Mercedes Benz Houston with approximately 120,000 searches.

7. Dodge Chicago

In the seventh slot is Dodge Chicago. Just about 114,000 searches happened for Dodge Chicago. This means it ranked higher than both Dodge Houston and Dodge Los Angeles.

8. Honda Chicago

This is probably the most surprising on the list. Honda Chicago falls to number 8 on the Chicago list. Something like 102,000 Honda Chicago searches were performed. This is well below both Honda Los Angeles and Honda Houston.

9. Cadillac Chicago

Cadillac Chicago came in ninth. This is good news for Cadillac because it didn’t even make it onto the Los Angeles List. And it was number 10 in Houston. Cadillac Chicago had about 100,000 searches.

10. Pontiac Chicago

Pontiac Chicago is a newcomer to the Top 10 Car List. Nearly 90,000 searches occurred for Pontiac Chicago. Pontiac didn’t show up on either the Los Angeles or Houston lists.

So that’s Chicago’s Top 10 Car List. Did your car make the list? If it did, then chances are that you’re searching for a good car. The majority tends to steer towards reliable cars.

Top 10 Houston Cars

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007
by Chris Roberts

Houston is the biggest city in Texas. Chances are that you’re going to need a car to get around. Would you like to know what other people from Houston are searching for?

This is the second article in a series about the top 10 cars in the major U.S. cities. The first city was Los Angeles. You will notice a different order with the car searches in Houston. Based on searches done, it appears car hunters in Houston prefer domestic cars. If you’re looking to buy a car in Houston, here are the top 10 cars: 1. Chevrolet Houston, 2. Ford Houston, 3. Toyota Houston, 4. Honda Houston, 5. Nissan Houston, 6. BMW Houston,7. Dodge Houston, 8. Mercedes Benz Houston, 9. Lexus Houston, and 10. Cadillac Houston.

1. Houston Chevrolet

If you chose Chevrolet Houston, you would have chosen the most searched for car in Houston. Nearly 257,000 people searched for Chevrolet Houston last month. This puts Chevrolet way ahead of the nearest searched for competitor in Houston.

2. Houston Ford

Ford Houston comes in second on the list, with just over 215,000 searches. Ford was the number 5 car in Los Angeles. With Chevrolet Houston and Ford Houston running in the number 1 and 2 spots on the Houston list, it’s clear that if you want to be in the in-crowd you’ll want to drive a domestic car.

3. Houston Toyota

Toyota Houston trailed Ford Houston by some 45,000 searches. But the fact that it’s still number 3 shows that Texans are becoming more interested in foreign automobiles.

4. Honda Houston

There were just over 145,000 Internet searches for Honda Houston. This puts Honda in fourth place.

5. Nissan Houston

In fifth place is Nissan Houston. That makes three Japanese automakers in a row. It does give the impression that although Texans still prefer domestic they may be switching loyalties to the more dependable Japanese cars. Nissan Houston was searched about 120,000 times.

6. Houston BMW

Sixth is BMW Houston. About 110,000 car shoppers searched for BMW’s in Houston. This is less than half the number of people who searched for BMW Los Angeles. BMW Houston’s lower spot on this list indicates that people from this great city don’t drive as flashy cars as in Los Angeles.

7. Dodge

The third American-made car on the list is Dodge Houston with just about 100,000 searches. Compared to its tenth place in L.A., Dodge Houston makes a solid showing here.

8. Houston Mercedes Benz

Almost 82,000 people searched for Mercedes Benz Houston. Just like in L.A., Mercedes Benz trailed BMW in Houston. However, the fact that it still made the Top 10 List shows that there is a solid following of Mercedes Benz cars in Houston.

9. Lexus

Another luxury automobile in the top 10. Lexus Houston received 68,000 searches. People who search Lexus like luxury but not the high prices of BMW or Mercedes Benz.

10. Cadillac Houston

The American luxury automobile comes in at number 10. Approximately 61,000 people performed searches for Cadillac Houston.

Use this Top 10 List to figure out what cars people prefer in Houston. Often the majority knows what’s best. But if you don’t want to be one of the crowd, look to one of the lower ranking vehicles.

The Top 10 Los Angeles Car Searches

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007
by Chris Roberts

Millions of people search for cars in Los Angeles every month. If you are undecided as to which brand to buy, check out this list to see the top 10 car searches in Los Angeles. It may help you to know which are the best cars out there.

Here are the top 10 cars in Los Angeles: 1. Los Angeles Toyota, 2. Los Angeles Honda, 3. Los Angeles Chevrolet, 4. Los Angeles BMW, 5. Los Angeles Ford, 6. Los Angeles Mercedes Benz, 7. Los Angeles Lexus, 8. Los Angeles Acura, 9. Los Angeles Nissan, and 10. Los Angeles Dodge.

1. Toyota Los Angeles

At least 350,000 Los Angelinos searched for Toyota Los Angeles in the last month. They’re good cars. So if you’re looking for one, you’re searching for the number one searched for car in Los Angeles. This puts you in good company.

2. Honda Los Angeles

Right behind Toyota Los Angeles are searches for Honda Los Angeles, another Japanese auto making giant. A look at the number of searches for Honda Los Angeles reveals that just over 310,000 people searched for Honda in Los Angeles last month.

3. Chevrolet Los Angeles

Chevrolet Los Angeles comes in at number three on the list but is the most searched for American car. If your looking for a solid car, you have joined over 280,000 tire kickers looking for the same thing. There is still a strong demand for Chevrolets in Los Angeles.

4. BMW Los Angeles

In the land of rich celebrities and millionaires, big ticket automobiles are in high demand. At the top of the list of luxury cars is BMW Los Angeles, the fourth on the list of most searched cars in Los Angeles. Though they’re a little more pricey than the top three, BMW Los Angeles makes a strong showing at 275,000 searches.

5. Los Angeles Ford

Ford Los Angeles hits the list at number five, which is a surprisingly high number for this struggling company. Apparently, over 240,000 people are still interested in searching out Ford Los Angeles. Despite recent setbacks their current cars are solid and edgy.

6. Los Angeles Mercedes Benz

The next luxury automobile on the list is Mercedes Benz Los Angeles, with a little over 185,000 searches. That is 90,000 less than the searches for BMW Los Angeles.

7. Lexus Los Angeles

Seventh is Lexus Los Angeles. Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, mustered 142,000 searches. This is surprising only in the fact that Toyota earned the top spot. It seems that Lexus Los Angeles doesn’t draw in as large a crowd as top luxury dealers BMW and Mercedes Benz.

8. Los Angeles Acura

Acura Los Angeles, the luxury division of Honda, comes in eighth place with close to 115,000 searches. Acura has recently updated the looks of many of the tired looking cars in its lineup. Like Toyota and Lexus, searches for Acura Los Angeles fall far behind searches for its more affordable division Honda Los Angeles.

9. Los Angeles Nissan

90,000 Los Angelinos searched for the number 9 car: Nissan Los Angeles. Nissan represents the last of the Japanese cars on our list. But Nissan’s luxury car, Infiniti, did not make it.

10. Dodge Los Angeles

Clinging to the number 10 spot is Dodge Los Angeles. Dodge is the last of the American automakers to make the list. Fewer than 85,000 people searched for Dodge Los Angeles last month. Based on the American automakers’ struggle in the past few years, the number ten spot is still decent for Dodge Los Angeles.

There you have it - the top 10 most searched for cars in Los Angeles. If you pick any of these cars you can rest assured that you will not be alone. That list again was 1. Los Angeles Toyota, 2. Los Angeles Honda, 3. Los Angeles Chevrolet, 4. Los Angeles BMW, 5. Los Angeles Ford, 6. Los Angeles Mercedes Benz, 7. Los Angeles Lexus, 8. Los Angeles Acura, 9. Los Angeles Nissan, and 10. Los Angeles Dodge.

Donating a Car to Charity

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
by Chris Roberts

Before you trade in your old car for a new one, you might want to consider donating your used vehicle to a car charity. You’ll feel good about donating to a good cause, you’ll get some tax relief and you won’t have to hassle with the car dealer about a price. The process of donating a car is fairly straightforward. If you donate to a car charity, you’ll probably find the process easier than trading the car in.

Car charities don’t just accept cars. Many also accept trucks, vans, RVs, boats, trailers, planes and motorcycles. If you’re worried that everyone donates their cars, don’t worry. Car charities say they can’t keep up with the request for quality used cars. Of course, these car charities need your donations. By donating your car, you help the car charity fund its programs.

Again, the warm fuzzies aren’t the only reason to donate; don’t forget the tax deduction. The car charity should give you a receipt for you donation. The receipt should include the value of the vehicle, the name of the charity and the date of the donation. The IRS has gotten stricter with its documentation requirements, so you’ll want to make sure you get a receipt.

Again, you have to be able to itemize your tax deductions in order to take a deduction for your car. For many people, the tax deduction is just a bonus for something that they were going to do anyway.

Again, the amount of deduction is the value of the car up to $500 or the amount for which the car is sold, if above $500. So how is the value of your donated car determined? You can deduct the full market price if your chosen car charity uses the vehicle for its own purposes: deliveries, pickups, or passenger transportation. That means that under the new tax regulations you can only deduct the fair market value of the car if the charitable organization uses the car in direct connection with their car charity. You can find the fair market value for your vehicle in the official Kelly Blue Book.

Did you remember the car’s title? Don’t forget it! You’ll need it at the time of donation. Some car charities can work around it, but many need the title in order to accept your donation. So as you’re driving your car to the charity, remember these three items: the title, the keys, and the paperwork.

See it’s simple. Giving your car to charity will save you time, headaches, maybe even give you a tax deduction. If you’ve been on the fence about donating your car, get off the fence and give a deserving charity a call.

Trucking: Reviews on Big Rigs in USA and Trucks from Mexico

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007
by Sandy Maseko

With big rigs, an individual must be at least 21 years of age before they are allowed to apply for a CDL. There are some special laws that apply for individuals from 16-20 years old who operate semi trucks used in conjunction with agricultural work. They also have to be able to successfully read and write English due to the many road signs pertaining to trucks on the road and the necessary paperwork.

The driving record of an individual is going to determine if they are able to obtain a CDL. While you can if you meet all the other requirements and have a valid traditional driver’s license, it doesn’t mean you will be able to get a job. Most employers look very closely at a driving record when hiring drivers. The cost of insurance for big rigs is very expensive, and the get a discount when they have a fleet of drivers with a safe driving history.

Others learn from someone else who already holds a CDL. It is very common for fathers to teach their sons how to do this, especially if they have a business where holding a CDL is vital. The rules for obtaining a CDL in the United States are in place to ensure that the roads are safe. They are also in place to prevent those who have a poor driving record from having control of such a large and powerful piece of equipment.

Should the United States allow Mexican Trucks?

The issue of trucks from Mexico being allowed to enter the United States is one that comes with plenty of controversy attached to it. The volumes of letters that various political offices have received from truck drivers and business owners in the trucking company indicate that this is not a welcomed change in the field of the trucking industry. Many are afraid it will compromise the contracts they have in place as the workers from Mexico will be willing to haul the loads for a lower price.

Yet there are some positive attributes to the thought of allowing trucks from Mexico into the United States. There is a shortage of qualified truck drivers to keep up with the demand for the amount of freight to be hauled. With the new hours of service laws, it is taking even longer for the work to be completed. With the additional trucks it is hopeful that it will help the overall industry.

With an agreement the USA is to sign with Mexico, it is believed that this agreement with Mexico could result in trucks from the United States being able to freely travel into Mexico. This could generate millions of dollars in revenue due to the fact that it would allow the border to become an area of free trade. This is likely to be a controversial issue that continues in the political arena for quite some time.

Truck Drivers: The Training Programs and the Drivers Association

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007
by Sandy Maseko

Truck driver training programs are good for truck drivers and some drivers are paid for by their employers. There are many instances where you can get your truck driver training paid for by an employer. Yet you have to look closely at what they require in return. Most of them will require you to sign a contract that you will work for their company for a specified amount of time. Generally one or two years is the term of such a contract. If you are fired or voluntarily leave the company before that span of time you will be responsible to repay the company for the cost of your truck driver training program.

You should ask about the curriculum of the program so you can see for yourself what information will be covered. You should also ask about class sizes so you can find out if you will be able to get one on one attention for your specific needs in the program. Don’t be shy about asking about the qualifications of their instructors either. The more experience they have in the classroom and driving a semi truck the more first hand information they will be able to share with you.

When you are on a drivers training program, you should use the opportunity and ask all the questions you need answers to. This will help you reduce your mistakes when driving.

Owner Operator Independent Driver Association (OOIDA)

One of the leading advocates for truck drivers is the Owner Operator Independent Driver Association (OOIDA). They offer a full range of services to support truck drivers including financing for trucks, advocating with the government to get certain issues addressed, and the opportunity to purchase health insurance and retirement plans.

They work hard to keep truck drivers informed of current issues, and post all of them on their website. They also offer scholarship programs for children of truck drivers, call to action forums, and information on new rules and regulations. If there is something you need to find information about but don’t see it offered from OOIDA, contact them. They will do all they can to get you the right resources to take care of it.

They have made significant contributions to the trucking industry over the past 30 years. Instead of focusing on the problems out there they focus on solutions. For example they pushed for more parking at truck stops and more rest areas with sufficient parking along common truck driving routes. This was in response to complaints that drivers continue to drive when they are tired or out of hours.

Trucks: Truck Driving Shows and Women Drivers

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007
by Sandy Maseko

On truck driving shows, many of the different vendors offer brochures, informational packets, and even have drawings for various prizes. You can take your time looking around and seeing what options you have. Chances are you may discover some very useful information that you can use to make your truck driving profession easier or to safe you money.

Truck shows are popular events for the manufacturers of semi trucks and trailers to put on displays as well. They bring out the latest models they have to offer as well as feature new engine designs. They offer brochures and even excellent financing options that you can take advantage of during the course of the truck driving show.

While you will find a truck driving show very educational, it will also provide you with a chance to relax and enjoy others with similar interests. In most instances various portions of your visit to a truck driving show are tax deductible so make sure you discuss this with your tax preparer.

Women drivers

Most people associate the term truck driver with men, but more and more women are finding this is an enjoyable career choice for them. Some of them are team drivers with another woman or their spouse. Others enjoy being out on the open road with their pets or by themselves.

Today there are almost 200,000 women truck drivers in the United States, so they make up approximately 5% of the total truck driver workforce. While many women still feel intimidated in this profession, they are finding hard work and dedication to safety and delivering loads on time is earning them respect of companies all over the Nation.

If you are a woman interested in driving a semi truck, take the time to find out what your options are. If you are a United States citizen, at least 21 years of age, and you have a good driving record then you may be eligible to obtain a CDL. You will need to find a quality truck driving training program so you can successfully pass the written and oral examinations.

Some Quick Reviews on Hybrid Cars

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007
by Gugu Maseko

Just where did a hybrid car get its start? Well, read on to find out. Hybrid cars are very popular for today’s car buyers, and there are many reasons why. But before you even think about choosing to buy a hybrid car, you might want to know a little bit about the history of a hybrid car first.

This electric car was a highly applauded innovation of its time. However, the only problem was that it was very difficult to recharge the car’s battery. Some pioneers came behind Anderson, but they too had a hard time getting the battery to recharge easily.

Soon pioneers combined both a gas and a battery powered engine to power what would become today’s hybrid car. And in 1999, Honda made a leap into the US market. It came out with the Insight. This was a lightweight two-door hybrid. Since then, hybrid cars have just been evolving and improving into what you see on the markets today. Hybrid cars aren’t just for people who are complex and want to combine battery and fuel power to get them where they need to go. Hybrid cars started out simple, and they are still simple today.

The reasons why plug-in hybrid cars may not be as green as you think

If you think that you will be making a difference in the environment by purchasing a plug-in hybrid car, you may want to give your purchase a bit more thought. Plug-in hybrids do help with the environment, but just because they don’t depend on fuel as much as regular hybrid cars do, doesn’t mean they are extremely beneficial to the environment. Actually, for many reasons, plug-in hybrid cars are not much better than regular hybrid cars when it comes to the green house effect and the ozone layer.

Plug-in hybrid cars are great hybrid cars to own and they are easy to love, but you might not want to make your expectations too high or you may end up disappointed. But in any case, make no mistake; a plug-hybrid car will be one of the best hybrid cars to buy when it comes out.

Is the future of hybrid cars unpredictable?

Yes would be the answer to that question, but why? It would seem odd that the future of hybrids cars would be unpredictable since everyone is talking about the pain at the pump all of the time. So just how is it that the solution to all of our gas problems has an unpredictable future?

But the question is what are you going to do to affect the future of hybrid cars? Are you going to buy or continue to drive your conventional car? The future of cars will be better if more people would consider buying a hybrid car. You can do it today. All it takes is good credit and a fondness for embracing better automotive technology. So a hybrid car is waiting for you, and it’s in just the color you wanted.
