Spending Through Sadness

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Kenrick Cleveland

A recent study out of the J. F. Kennedy School for Government at Harvard has found that even momentary sadness causes consumers to increase spending.

We know, as persuaders, that consumers buy based on their emotions and gut instincts. Part of how we access these emotions is through criteria elicitation and appealing to their core values. The Harvard study, entitled, “Misery is Not Miserly: Sad and Self-Focused Individuals Spend More” will be published in ‘Psychological Science’ in June 2008. The study shows that people spend more when they are in sad or inwardly focused states of mind as opposed to people in neutral states of mind.

When we as persuaders use anchoring and peak emotional states to sell, we are utilizing a feeling of self focus (and on occasion, sadness, especially in the case of people with an ‘away from’ orientation.)

The study was conducted by inciting a heightened self focus in combination with the participants of the study being shown either a sad video clip or a neutral video clip advertising the product in question. The ones who viewed the sad clip offered 300% more than the neutral participants.

I suspect that if the folks doing the study also had a very happy, positive video clip of the product, that too would have incited increased spending. And had the researchers been aware of the towards and away continuum, they would have been able to further understand the benefits of peak emotional states in sales.

The towards and away continuum is powerful in determining how your prospect responds in specific contexts. Not everyone views the world through rose colored glasses. There are people who will respond positively to a negative associations.

Take the case of financial advisers, for example. Once you determine whether your prospect is towards or away, you can tailor the language you use to their particular orientation. After eliciting the prospect’s criteria, and finding that it is financial security, it is just one more step to finding out their orientation. Asking the question, ‘What will having financial security do for you?’ will give you the direction.

If they say, ‘Well, I’m tired of worrying about my finances. . .’ That’s an away from. If they say, ‘Well, I just want to stay in control of my finances. . .’ That’s more of a toward orientation.

With the away from person, you don’t want to be optimistic, just as with the toward person, you don’t want to be pessimistic. Tailoring your language in such a way that you bring more “pain” to the away person and more “ease” to the toward is really the key to selling.

The Harvard study didn’t get it wrong, but they really only got part of the story.

Need to Run an Online Meeting? Here’s How

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Tyler Vaughn

Knowing how to run an online meeting is becoming more and more important in business. Top leaders are equally comfortable working online or face-to-face.

Online meetings can save you money on travel, boost communication between workers and clients, even increase sales. If you run them right. Follow these 8 tips and you’ll be ahead of the game.

1. Send an agenda in advance. Yes, I know this is a standard recommendation. It’s still an important part of a successful meeting. More so online, where we have to add more visual and verbal cues to keep things on track.

2. Learn how to use your internet conferencing software. Invest a half hour in yourself and learn the application. If you’re worried about the cost, most of the vendors offer free trials - sign up for one and practice.

3. Make sure pre-work is done. If the participants need to prepare for the meeting, be sure they know it. One of the quirks of online meetings is that participants sometimes place them at a lower priority than face-to-face. As the meeting leader, take an extra few minutes to check in advance that the prep work is underway. A gentle “just checking in” reminder - preferably over the phone - works wonders.

4. Keep a confident smile on your face. You’ll find that your tone of voice follows your face. Since the attendees can’t see you, they’ll read more into your voice than they would otherwise.

5. This should be obvious, but just in case: keep the noises out of the background. Have dogs? Put them in a different room. (Mine are guaranteed to bark at a car 5 minutes into a call.) Ask participants to turn their cell phones to vibrate. Don’t use a keyboard near the phone. No eating. You get the idea.

6. Don’t be the note-taker. Ask someone else to handle this responsibility. Managing a good online meeting requires your attention. Don’t distract yourself with the additional task of taking minutes.

7. Do participants understand (or agree on) the key points? We don’t have facial expressions to help us know if everyone’s in agreement. Instead, online meeting leaders have to ask specific questions after each major topic — use that feedback to gauge the participants’ understanding.

8. Keep track of who’s joined the call. This is particularly important if it’s going to be an interactive meeting (as opposed to a formal presentation). Your participants will want to know who else is on the call. Ask everyone to identify themselves at the start of the meeting.

These tips will take you a long way in your desire to run a successful online meeting. Still feeling uncomfortable? Sign up for a free trial with a internet conference vendor (see resource box for helpful links) and practice a bit with a friend. You’ll both emerge knowing exactly how to run a meeting online.

This is also a good spot to include what kind of end game you have. While they can be general goals that you want to stick to, you should follow it up with some rough gross and net income figures that you are want to achieve.

The next part of your small business plan should consider the market, both where it stands and where you will fit in. Why do people need your service and how will your business or service will change the market? How are you going to get some buzz going about your services and will you have different types of customers that will be affected by various parts of your business? This part of your business plan essentially “proves” your business has a right to exist and gives evidence for why it should be something to put your time and energy into, so take some extra time here.

Financial capitol is going to be the next thing that you tackle. Include general expenses, contingency fees, licensing fees if necessary and anything else you can think of that will make you put out money. If you are a bit new to this, look at small business plans from similar successful businesses to see the best way to do this. Put down an accurate view of your current business status, but don’t forget to look to the future.

For the final step, think about management. Who is running things, and what are their responsibilities? This is a prime method to maintain your organization and verbalize responsibilities. Like any other part of the plan, this section can be altered, but the important thing to do is to have it there in the first place.

Take some time to be confident that your business plan is up to snuff, and you will discover that your business will start becoming profitable much faster.

Leaders are not born; they are trained. Despite what you may think, parents do not simply give birth to leaders. Instead, leaders come about by following their dream of being the best they can be. Only then can a leader transfer this energy to those they manage.

The manager is the one who is responsible for the hiring of the best sales force. This is also the beginning of the manager’s communication of their ability to train these potential sales people to achieve their highest potential, it starts with the first interview.

The Value of Testimonials in Online Marketing

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Jason Pearson

Finding people to write sincere and glowing reviews of your business can be challenging. The results, though, are often undeniably profitable. Using genuine testimonials on your website is one way to build your image as a reputable company and expand your clientele at the same time.

You should keep in mind that websurfers can almost always spot false advertising. Instead of creating outlandish fictional customer comments, it is a better idea in the long run to seek out real customers’ opinions. This too is usually evident to online consumers and can build a sense of trust with your prospects, making them more likely to buy from you.

To know which of your customers would be well-suited to write a testimonial, offer a survey at the end of their experience. You can get an idea of how happy they were overall and about each part of the process along the way. You will also be able to tell if they are a potential cheerleader of your business.

Ideally, if your product has made someone’s life easier, she may be grateful enough to share this solution with others, just because she wants to help others out. Realistically, if you include a coupon or giveaway with a completed survey, you will get more responses. It’s also a good idea to get a professional’s help when writing your survey, to make sure you get the right kind of information in return.

Another way to find people to write testimonials in their own words is to use an opt-in email list. The subscribers to your emails can be offered a free sample of your work, whatever it may be. The only condition would be that they provide their feedback in return.

This isn’t as difficult as it sounds. Most people like being a part of improving a product and will pass this information along to others if they have a good experience. They will also appreciate that their opinion is valued, so make sure you let them know this.

Don’t fall into the trap of fabricating testimonials just because you suspect your competitors have done so. If your product is new to the market, you have to extend yourself that much more and offer some freebies to get what you need. In the process you may just build a strong customer base and a sense of satisfaction as well.

An effective sales letter containing testimonials can strongly persuade one buyer to follow in another’s footsteps. If you have a high quality product or service that you believe in, it will not be long before others feel the same way. Then it is just a matter of finding a few happy customers and allowing them to share their satisfaction with others.

Getting Grateful

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Kenrick Cleveland

“It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” -Wallace D. Wattles, The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” -Melodie Beattie

Gratitude is an incredibly valuable and powerful emotion to intentionally express because when we are grateful, we attract more to be grateful for.

I mention gratitude at the end of each of my Persuasion Factor calls and my Elite Coaching Club because gratitude should be our constant companion not just a Thanksgiving Day foot note or brief prayer on Sunday. It should permeate all of our interactions.

Experiencing gratitude does not have to be limited to when someone gives you a gift or does you a favor. True gratitude is about looking deeply at our lives and understanding how truly lucky we are to be alive at this moment in time.

Every night and every morning I think of gratitude. I have a huge list, as do all of us, of things I am so truly thankful for: family, colleagues, students, friends, health, financial success, employees. I am thankful when it rains because I know that the Pacific Northwest is lush and green as a result of this rain. I am grateful when it’s sunny, because it really rains a lot here.

I’m grateful for simple things and complicated things. And throughout my day, I stop to consider other people’s situations, whether they be more challenging or easier than mine, and I am grateful for the struggles I’ve had to endure, and grateful for the things I accomplish with ease, both, because these are the things that have made me what I am and brought me to this point in life.

There are going to be times when being grateful isn’t easy — times that are trying or difficult. Maybe your health is bad. Your body isn’t working the way it should. Instead of cursing it for what it can’t do, be grateful for what it can.

There’s an old Irish proverb that says, ‘Count your joys instead of your woes; count your friends instead of your foes.’ This is beautiful. In my opinion, the key is all in what we choose to focus on.

As you begin to take notice of all that is good in your life, this gratitude will turn your life around.

by Kay Petronelli

Many businesses have a lot of success through advertising by giving away free promotional material. Instead of the standard marketing items, electronic promotional products are available, affordable and there are many different types of products to choose. What a great way to advertise your business and the recipient can have fun too.

Any person who uses a computer will need a computer mouse. It is very easy to put your company logo, name or website on a mouse and give it away. You can get the mouse to connect to a computer through a USB port or even get a wireless mouse that is read through the USB port. This is a very effective way to advertise your business.

Giving a way a USB drive is another form of advertising for your business. They are small, portable and can hold a huge amount of data. There are two sides that can be imprinted with either your name and logo on one side and then the other side can have your business phone number and website address.

The USB drives come in different sizes but the most popular are either the 64 or 128 megabyte. The cost of these items are less than $15.00 each and if you buy in large quantities the price is usually reduced. Many people who receive an USB port can use it for many years so when purchasing them remember to consider the quality of the product.

Every day technology advances and another type of Ipod or similar product is on the market. But, there are still many people who prefer listening to music the traditional way and that is by using a radio. Portable FM Radios are great electronic promotional products that some businesses should consider putting their logo on.

A small radio that is designed to be used with earplugs and can be bought for only $3.00. This is great for people who want to carry the radio with them when they walk down the street for lunch or just want to listen to some great music privately in their office.

There are many other electronic products that can be used for promotional giveaway. The three mentioned above are the most popular products but there are others. For example, you could give away a USB light that can be plugged into a computer’s USB port so you can look in hard to see places.

If you work with a business that does a lot of international travel you can give away free travel adapters that have your logo printed on them. You can also give away cases that are meant for portable media such as an Mp3 player that have your logo printed on them. These are very affordable products that people will use on a daily basis.
