Learning Digital Camera Basics

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
by Barry Craft

Understanding megapixels is one of the first things to consider when thinking of buying a digital camera. Megapixels are important because they determine the size and usually the quality of the images. Having more megapixels allows you to make larger prints.

Nowadays, 5 megapixels is a good starting point for an entry level digital camera. You can expect excellent prints at 4 x 6 and even as large as 8 x 10.

The next important thing when buying a camera is which type to get. An SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera is expensive, but if you are looking for a high-resolution camera with excellent picture quality, SLR cameras are the way to go. This would be the digital equivalent of a 35 mm film camera.

If you are accustomed to using a 35mm film camera you’ll recognize many of the same features. In particular the ability to change various lenses in the camera makes it quite popular.

A point and shoot camera will cost less, still give you excellent image quality, and can be very good at macro photography. Also, point and shoot cameras don’t have the loud shutter clack that many SLR cameras have, although the newer SLR cameras are much quieter. Another advantage of point and shoot cameras is they have many automated features and preset programs to give you optimal photographs especially if you are a beginner.

After you get a camera, you must choose a good memory card for your camera. The most popular types of memory cards for digital cameras are MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick (MS), Smartmedia (SM), Secure Digital (SD), xD-Picture Card (xD), and CompactFlash (CF). Certain cameras require certain memory card types, so make sure you ask an expert which memory card is right for the camera you have.

After you purchase your camera make sure you get the proper memory card for your camera since there are various formats. If you plan to keep the pictures stored on your camera’s memory instead of downloading them to your computer you want to get it’s a memory card with a larger storage capacity to allow you to this save more pictures.

Once you take the pictures on your camera it’s important to know how to transfer the pictures to your computer. You need to transfer them to your computer first or you can send them. You can either use a USB cable which generally comes with the camera or a card reader that plugs into your computer.

By using a card reader instead of the USB cable, it allows you to save the batteries on your camera because the camera does not have to be powered on during the transfer process. A memory card reader simply plugs into your computer using the USB cable and the card reader has various slots and all you do is remove the memory card from your camera and insert it into the card reader.

Depending on the type of computer you have, a message will come up saying that you camera is connected. Or, in the case of a Mac computer, you just go into iPhoto, which comes standard on newer Mac computers. Use the help tab at the top of your screen to find out how to download your pictures.

After you have downloaded your pictures, you can delete the pictures on your memory card, freeing up lots of space so that you can take more pictures. It is also a very good idea to periodically make a copy of the pictures on your computer and burn them to either a CD or DVD as a backup copy in case your computer’s hard drive fails. You probably have spent a lot of time and effort in creating some beautiful pictures and you wouldn’t want to lose them.

Fishing Supplies Online

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
by John LeClere

Fishing supplies are available for the young and old. We know that having the right equipment makes one more confident in their performance in the water.

A Visitor Center is a also a good location for fishing supplies. Alternatively parks sometimes have bait shops, where wildlife and history displays, trail maps, snacks and gift items may also be found.

Lures with frills that make them look like large, colorful insects require a bit of extra work: when they’re in the water, they don’t do much good unless you wiggle them around. For trout, you can buy paste that rolls into clumps. Lure-tossers should try beetle spins and small jigs in the shallows, experimenting with color to find the best bite. Lure fishing for trout has become something of a lost art, most anglers having gone over to fly-fishing or fallen prey to the darkside of fishing by resorting to bait.

Experienced fishermen know all about the cutthroat trout. That is because it is a huge gaming fish and it is difficult to catch. Experiment with different hooks, weights, line, rods and reels, but my advice would be to eventually work your way into having an exactly matched set of at least 4 rods and reels. When you learn what works for you, you will be much happier with a matching set of gear.

Trout’s metabolism makes them want to seek out pools near the bank that are warmed by the sun, so they are more vulnerable. Also remember that due to the slower metabolism, the fish will be sluggish.

Sportsmen will also enjoy fishing for the largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, bullhead, white bass, crappie and bluegill which abound in the lake. The outflow area, though difficult to access, seasonally supports very large numbers of large sport fish. Sport fishing supplies can now be bought via the web.

Quilts: Keepsakes for Any Generation

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
by Sara Musfeldt

My mother, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother have all been quilters. Growing up I didn’t appreciate the time the women in my family spent underneath a lamp studying the fine stitches they created one painstaking thread at a time. I didn’t understand why they would spend months focusing on these intricate details only to find a safe place for it later where little hands, dust bunnies, and the sun couldn’t reach it.

Now that I’m older and my grandmother and great-grandmother are gone, I do appreciate that time and I’m grateful for those memories and the quilts they’ve left behind. I understand now that the sun, dust, and my dirty hands would have ruined something they wanted my children and grandchildren to have.

Mass production is now possible with advances in technology. The arts and crafts world, including quilting, has been significantly changed by mass production. Although this has increased the value of handmade quilts, it poses the question “why exactly are quilts from the days of yore better?”

When a quilter makes a quilt completely by hand, the pieces of fabric (usually squares) are chosen for artistic reasons or a similar purpose. Mass produced quilts are made with efficiency rather than with the long life of a quilt in mind. With handmade quilts, however, the design and fabric that hold the squares together are chosen so that the quilts will last lifetimes.

The mass produced quilts that are available from retailers or online vendors are cheap, and production is fast. It may be possible to order a custom-made quilt in which you are allowed to choose the colors of the fabric, the design, and even where the pieces of fabric will be placed on the quilt. However, these types of quilts are produced quickly, and most of the time, they end up looking like most other quilts. Custom, handmade quilts are artistic, individually created just for you, and will last lifetimes.

If you choose a custom quilter, he or she will be able to guide you on what designs and colors will complement your theme and desired outcome. Fiber artists are putting their names on such quilts and therefore have as much interest as you in making the quilt turn out fantastic, something a mass-producer of quilts will not care about.

Additionally, if the quilt you have in mind will be a keepsake, then for that reason alone a custom, hand made quilt is your best option. They take a little while to make, and they’re more expensive than the mass-produced quilt, but with this option the end result will be a quilt that your children’s children will hide from the sun, dust bunnies, and dirty hands too.

by Barry Craft

Special moments can now be captured with better accuracy than ever before with the advancements in digital photography today. Shutter speeds are now faster, and the resolution is now better, so excellent pictures can now be taken by beginner and expert photographers. If these features don’t help a great photo be taken, the photo editing software around today can.

Any photographer that is worth his salt will tell you that when it comes to taking good photos, timing is everything. There is a very small window of opportunity to capture a truly great shot, and whether you’re after that sunset or trying to capture that all important race’s winner, your fingers must have precision timing and an intuitive sense of when to snap. It’s tougher than it looks, and it’s why photography is really considered an art form.

The ideal shot may almost happen, but we don’t realize it in the end. A lot of times, we have most of the main elements, but lack a very important one.

Maybe the lighting is just a little bit off, even if you correctly framed your subject. Or maybe you forgot to use a red-eye reduction setting or flash. This is where the photo editing software comes in and fixes all of these problems.

Pictures can be edited in only minutes to make them the best they can be. Some awesome features that digital cameras can have are crop features, zoom features, automatic color enhancement, and red-eye reduction. If you have these tools, digital photography can be made easier than ever before.

A photo editing program is really all it takes to make a great photo. If you mess up with something in the picture, it can easily be fixed with a photo editing program. Your camera is only your vessel from which great pictures come from. The photography editing program is the rest.

This is when photograph magic happens. By photograph magic, I mean that you can turn your images into whatever you want them to be.

If you really want to be able to take excellent digital photographs, you can certainly find everything that you need including the camera and the software online or at your local retailers. Digital cameras are so popular these days you can find them just about anywhere. You just want to find a camera that will do what you want it to. You want a camera that offers great pictures as well as easy docking options for downloading to your printer or computer. You can edit your pictures as you like with programs like Kodak Picture, and Corel photo software.

Sunday, April 20th, 2008
by Arcol Mertin

If you are tired of the ho-hum of life and wants to spread a bit, maybe you should get a hobby kit. Much leisure is different kits that can help a beginner learn more about the hobby quickly and easily. It is not easy to teach you some hobby, but with a hobby kit, you can learn from the kit.

For example, if you have wanted to learn how to make a needlecraft, as the cross or crewel embroidery stitch, there is no better way to start than with a kit. In a hobby kit will receive a piece of cloth with the design and stamped on, or silk thread in the right colours, and possibly already cut to the proper length, and a needle. You can even obtain an embroidery hoop in the kit. When you buy a kit hobby, be sure to read the package to see if any other materials or tools will be needed to do the hobby.

A hobby kit is also the best way to learn a hobby like building model cars. In a model car kit, you will get all the pieces you need and detailed instructions. In some kits, you might also receive paint, a brush, and glue, but read the label. You might have to provide these things separately.

In autumn, the shops are full of folders that could start a child on a hobby that would last throughout his life. You can find small loom kits, soap making glycerine kits, craft kits heel, wood for folders and folders of art. There is a line of colourful Klutz books put out by the company that provides instruction in each hobby and has a package of materials for learning the hobby. Some of the topics are Klutz books filled polymer clay modelling, styling hair, and pompon creations. All are cleverly written and a lot of fun.

Another hobby that can be learned from a kit is starting garden seedlings, especially herbs. A seed starting kit typically contains a pot, a small trowel, seeds, fertilizer, and a greenhouse dome or cover. Potting soil may need to be purchased separately.

When choosing a hobby kit, take care to get one that is appropriate for the recipient. Sometimes a hobby kit is quite difficult. An example of a difficult project is a kit of electronic wires from the radio. If a team is a gift for a child and it is too hard, the wind up collecting dusts on some shelf. In fact, it could collect dust if you buy for yourself! Consider obtaining a small project that may end in a short period of time so that you can get a feel for the fans. The next hobby kit buy can be more difficult if you find that you enjoy the hobby and have a real desire to learn more about him.

The Basics of Leatherworking

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by Ethan O. Tanner

Leatherworking can be a lot of fun, but if you are just starting out, it can prove to be quite a challenge. There are many items that you can craft when leatherworking. These items are great to sell at flea markets, online, eBay, or in a yard sale. You may even choose to give these items as gifts throughout the year for various occasions. Here is a review the basics of leatherworking so that you can get a start on that long list of projects.

Leatherworking usually only requires a few basic tools for beginners. You will want to buy a ruler, or measuring tape. The next thing that is necessary is a pen, pencil, or marker that will be visible on the leather so that you can draw the desired outline. You will also want to buy a knife, leather shear or some type of special sharp object to cut the leather as you are working with it. Lastly, you will want to go to a craft specialty store and buy needles that are intended to work with leather. Once you have all of your necessary tools, the next step is to obtain the leather.

When purchasing leather, you may want to do some make inquiries and shop around a little. If you are looking for inexpensive leather, it is best to shop at local thrift stores and flea markets. Most leather purchased at these various types of venues are great in quality, and low in price. This is the best way to shop for leather when you are new to leather craft.

If you go to a craft specialty store, or a leather store, you will find that leather ranges in cost based on type, thickness, and overall weight. This can prove to be more costly as leather is sold by the square foot. There are many online places to buy leather, and if you know the basics of leather you may find good buys in leather.

Once you have purchased all the materials that you will need for your project, you must decide the best methods of making sure that the pieces are bound together. It is important that you do not use pins and other types of products to bind your material as these things often leave a type of scarring on the material. However, you can use mild glue or clips in order to bind the leather together so that you can work with it without difficulty.

Once you are ready to craft the project, you can choose to sew or lace the thread onto the leather. If you choose to sew the material, you should only use a sewing needle intended for leatherworking. These types of needles cut as you sew and make it quite easy to finish your leather craft project. You can also choose to lace your leather craft project. Basically, you simply make holes at equal intervals all the way through the piece of leather and then lace the thread in and out.

There are many different kinds of stitches that you can use when crafting leather. You can select from a saddle stitch, a running stitch, a cross stitch, or a whip stitch. It all depends on what works best for you and the leatherworking job that you are working on.

How do you identify Roman coins?

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by Jacob Weasley

Identifying a coin can be extremely easy given the right circumstances, but is often difficult or impossible depending on the coin.

The most important feature of identifying Roman coins is making sure the inscription is legible. Often parts will be worn off, but as long as the damage is not too bad you should be able to work with it. This is made easier by the fact that the letters in the Roman alphabet are all in use in English today, so you don’t have to worry if you’ve interpreted the character right, because they are all familiar. One potential pitfall here is that certain letters can resemble others. They are not very large and somewhat worn, so you have to make sure you are looking carefully.

It also helps to look at the picture of the ruler on the coin before beginning major research. A lot of times someone who has been doing this for awhile can identify the ruler on a coin simply by recognition. You should remember though that this technique should only be used as a guide and not necessarily as the final decision. For actually making the call on the identification of a coin you’ll need to combine all of its aspects and make a decision.

Along with this point is the idea that Roman coins changed their styles through the years. Early on you tend to see much larger coins, while the later ones often seem smaller and more detailed. Recognzing these changes can save you a lot of time because you will already know what catagory your coins are in so you can target your research.

The best way to identify your coin is to use an online database. Once you have written down the letters you were able to read you should go to Wildwinds.com. Enter any of the information you have into the partial inscription search and you will get a list of all possible coins. It is possible that you will get a large list of coins that will not give you an immediate answer, but hopefully it is small enough to help you narrow it down. You will most likely need to look at the pictures to help you determine which one it is so keep in mind the minute details with each coin.

When you finally identify your coin it is a rewarding experience. You are no longer holding a random piece of metal, but a coin that represents a period in time and a the reign of an individual. This makes the hobby and the coins themselves infinitely more interesting and significant.

How Gardening Gloves Can Help You Grow A Better Garden

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by Dave Truman

A garden is a great place to relax. The thought of having a place to pick those fragrant blossoms as well as fresh vegetables and herbs, is a pleasant one. Gardening and pruning plants like rose bushes can be quite painful unless you protect your hands.

The most important tool for a gardener is your gardening gloves. If you’re a beginner at gardening, you may find it a little difficult to find the right gloves. The following can make purchasing gardening gloves a little easier.

The best type of gardening gloves should be made from very good quality leather. They must also be gloves that can be used for whatever gardening job that you will embark upon. Buying a pair or two of general purpose gardening gloves that have a cloth backing to them, will let your hands stay cool and comfortable during the time you are gardening.

You may decide to garden after a rain and that will mean dealing with some damp and muddy gardening. If you don’t like the idea of working with wet and slippery hands, you can purchase rubber gloves that have a lining made of cotton to protect from the mud and dirt.

Most of us use a pesticide to keep our plants healthy and free from insects. Your hands will not be protected from harmful chemicals by wearing gloves made from latex or plastic. Gloves made from neoprene are designed especially for this.

All most every garden has roses bushes planted in them. While a rose bush that is filled with blooms is a gorgeous sight, the many thorns on the plant can make a gardener’s heart sink. To prune those very thorny plants you should wear gardening gloves that have long wrist protectors.

The time will come when you want to transplant fragile seedlings to your garden and you will need special gloves to let you handle them with as much care as possible. Many plants need to be planted during the early winter and wearing gloves is a good idea. But regular gloves may hinder your ability to transplant them. In this case there are gloves that don’t have fingers to allow you to do this delicate planting but also keep you warm in the process.

The only other tip that you need to consider when you choose your gardening gloves is to see that they fit your hands comfortably. Remember that gardening gloves truly are a gardener’s most trusted companion. They will not only help to protect your hands from dirt, mud and thorns, they also aid in the prevention of painful blisters. Thus you will need to choose your gardening gloves with care.

Shopping Online For Model Railway Equipment

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by Bill Murphy

One of the best things about present day is being able to access so many different materials and supplies. With the arrival of the internet, you can now have those hard to find toys or models delivered right to your door without needing to go anywhere. The only downside to this abundance of supplies is that you’re not always sure what you’re getting. Without actually looking at an item before hand, it’s possible to be mislead by images and descriptions. By being careful, you can avert many of the problems you might have purchasing items online.

The rules for buying model railroad supplies online, just as with any other purchase are simple:

1) Buy from someone who is trustworthy

2) Buy only well known brands that you have already dealt with

3) Understand their return policy and any costs accompanying the exchange

4) Use a payment method such as a credit card that offers you some protection, especially on high cost items

There are many available online resources with proven track records and finding these by discussion groups and querying other hobbyists is always a good way to weed through the numerous suppliers. The lowest cost should not be the only deciding criteria when making a purchase ” but the quality of the materials and the friendliness and availability of the store personnel both online and if possible in person should be taken into account. This is especially the case when buying from auction sites or other low cost options ” be sure to double check the seller to make sure that they are providing a quality product ” price isnt everything.

With a lasting hobby such as model railroading you may be forming a long relationship with the vendors you choose and you should expect them to act suitably. With a click of the mouse and a little time and research and a few dollars, you can find that special locomotive and who knows what else.

7 Essential Gardening Tools

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
by Dave Truman

As a child you have probably seen your mother or father pottering about in the garden. They seemed to be working with lots of tools. You might have played with a gardening tool as well. Now that you are grown-up and have your own garden you too will need those garden tools.

There are many different garden tools at hand at your local gardening spot. The tools will be in different price ranges and the trick is to not buy a lot of expensive things that you may never use.

Your first item should be a spading fork. It looks similar to a pitch fork, but with a shorter handle and wider tines. The spading fork will help you loosen the hard soil and work the ground so you can add plants.

You will need to prepare the ground with a hoe after you’ve dug it. A hoe will allow you to cultivate the soil so nutrients and water will be able to find its way to the plants. You may also need a round ended shovel if you plan to plant larger items such as trees or shrubs.

Your best friend in the garden is water. Your watering can should be equipped with a long nozzle which controls the rate of water flow to allow you a gentle plant watering. It will also enable you to be a little further away while watering the plants. When your seedlings are young, a watering can that has a detachable head is also very useful.

The best way to level your garden prior to planting is to use a bow rake. This rake has a metal frame that is shaped like a bow. The tines are short and are attached to one side of the rake. With a good bow rake the removal of large clods of earth or rocks can be done. When you turn to the flat side of the rake, you can smooth the soil and get it ready for planting.

Good but inexpensive garden shears can remove dead branches and stems from your plants. You can prune and shape your trees and shrubs with this gardening tool. Before you buy a pair of garden shears or clippers as they are also called, make sure that the shears will fit your hand comfortably.

These are just the basic gardening items to start you off. As your interest in gardening grows, you will also expand your knowledge of what other tools are available and what would be appropriate for you.
