Protect your Property with Storm Windows

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Ray Walberg

If you live close to the Gulf coast then you should be pretty used to the idea of hurricanes by now! In this area winds commonly reach as high as 100+ miles per hour, this high wind can last for many hours. This wind causes trees to fall over, and also causes damage to houses. In particular these winds can blow out your windows.

People living in these areas have come up with ingenious ways of protecting their lives and their property. One of the most successful ways of protecting your property is to board it up before the storm hits. The doors and windows should be covered using protective sheets which stops the glass from shattering. This also helps to keep the rain out, and so the house has a much better chance of survival. Windows and doors that are installed on a do it yourself basis can do a lot to protect your home in a storm.

Many lumber yards in the area sell a lot of wood during the time before the storm as people are buying things to protect their homes with. Some people will wait until the last minute, and so rush out to buy plywood and other materials. Due to waiting until the last minute plywood will be very expensive, not to mention it will make your house look awful, not that anyone will mind when a storm hits! You will then have to take the boards off the doors and windows after the storm has finished, this is a very time consuming process.

Some people have come up with a much easier way to protect their homes. Instead of boarding up their windows they have installed protective shutters and storm windows to their properties. These shutters and windows are capable of protecting the home from damage when a storm hits, plus they do not look ugly. These can be left up, you do not have to pay any money again when a storm hits. It’s so easy to close these shutters when compared to nailing sheets of plywood to your home.

There are several different types of storm shutters:

- Exterior storm shutters - These are designed to be functional but also fairly decorative. They protect your windows from wind and any flying debris. These are very useful if you go on holiday for a few weeks as they can secure your home. You can make your own storm shutters using wood if required. - You can also purchase pre-manufactured storm shutters, these are typically made out of wood or a heavy grade of vinyl. These are available in many different styles, sizes and colors. - Rolling style shutters are also available, these are typically manufactured from aluminum. These shutters are also useful at controlling the amount of light let into the property.

All of these types of shutter are fairly easy to install for a competent DIYer! Most popular shutter designs are made out of tongue and groove, which makes them easy to fit together:

1. Start by measuring the width and height of your window. Your window may not be square, so be sure to check at all edges.

2. Start to assemble the boards together, use clamps to hold them in place. Cut them to length, but make sure they are half an inch shorter than the height of the window.

3. Paint them whatever color you like

4. Hang on your house using nice hinges

Storms aren’t fun, but that doesn’t mean that they have to damage your home. By investing in some of these simple ideas you can save yourself a lot of money in the future.

Important Grouting Tips that You Should Know!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
by Peter Mason

When you are choosing the tiles for your new floor it’s important not to forget about the grout. Grout may not seem very important, however there are a great number of things to consider. There are some important things which you must remember when choosing grout.

Color

Grout isn’t just available in white anymore, it’s also available in a wide number of different interesting colors. Grout may be used for a purpose, however it’s also visible. You could match the color to your tile so that it doesn’t stand out so much. Bear in mind that light color grout will get dirty much quicker than darker grout. Grout will also change in color when it gets older, you must bear that in mind.

Get the Right tools for the job

It is extremely important that you buy all of the things that you need. You don’t want to do a job badly, rather you want to do it properly. Make sure you buy a high quality grout because then it will last for a long time. You need something to apply the grout, a spatula or trowel is perfect for this. You should also use a sponge to remove excess grout so that it’s all at the same level.

Spacing

It can be very difficult to space the tiles out evenly, you need to be very patient and take a long time to make sure everything looks ok. You should practice laying the tiles on the floor before you stick them down. You won’t be able to move the tiles around for long when you apply the adhesive, and so you may need to work quite quickly. Planning ahead and doing a dry run can save a considerable amount of time and stress in the long run.

When you know the size of the tiles you’ll be able to work out how much grout you want to have showing when fitting the tiles. You can purchase plastic tile spacers to ensure that there is an even gap if desired.

You must make sure that your tiles are in the right place before putting the grout down because it’s not possible to move them after this.

Sealant

You need to use a sealant of some kind to protect the grout. This will stop the grout from staining or getting damaged. Sealants can be brought from your local hardware store, or the same place which you purchased your tiles from. It can be very difficult to put the sealant onto the tiles because you have to cover all of the grouted areas.

Maintenance

Grout and tiles need constant maintenance in order to keep them in good condition. Dirt collects in the grout and can cause it to become stained. Unless your grout is level it can cause problems and cause damage to the grout.

DIY Facts for Windows

How to find replacement screens

How to replace the screens Here are the items that you will need: new screen scissors cement for household items screen rolling tool stapler putty razor or knife

Screen repairs -if you find a little hole in the screen of your window you will need to repair it to keep out the bugs. Garden windows, which tend to get a lot of use, are especially prone to damage. The plastic screen will be harder to patch and most need to be replaced. There are fiberglass screens that are going to be either hard or easy. Metal type screens are the easiest to work on. You need to measure the hole and then get the patches that are already made. For the even smaller holes you will find that you will need less patch material for this problem.

Insert the patch into the screen using a few pieces around the edges. You will want to interweave them and keep them tight in place. The strands can be bent by hand but if you have a heavier screen you will need to use pliers or some type of tool. There are plastic patches that are going to be held in place with cement and woven in the right place.

When you are replacing screens that are metal and made from wood are going to be a little bit harder.

Metal frame replacement

You should remove the screen from the window and put it on a flat area that you can work on it. Take off the rubber edge from the used screen. You may be able to use it later if it is in good shape. You need to measure the rubber properly. You might also be able to use the old screen for patches later on if it is in good shape as well. Measure the window and then measure what you need from the roll of screen. You need to leave enough on the ends to reach the outer parts of the frame.

Using a screen tool you will want to start at the corners and tighten it up. You will then want to put the rubber into place and set the screen into the frame. Do this slowly with your fingers around the screen. This will help you to avoid any mishaps or problems with the rescreening process.

Replacing a screen with a wood frame With the frame you will need to start at the middle of a strip and bring it toward the ends. This is to ensure that it does not break. You must stretch the screen tight for a good finished look. You may find that some of the stock is going to be wider than the frame. You will have to use 1×4 sized stock to figure out the right way to construct the wedges.

You must cut the new screen from the replacement roll. You should be careful to leave the excess on the sides so that you can reach the outer edge of the frame easier. Then you must stable the screen around the top edge. You have to attach the cleat to a stable service and add on cleats.

In between the cleats and the frame you will then begin to insert the wedges. Tap down the wedges until the screen is pulled tight. You need to trim the remaining screen and countersink the brads to fit the screen perfectly. You can then fill the holes with wood putty.

Finally you should staple the entire screen tight in place to work from the center out toward the edges. You should remove the wedges and the screen should then stay tight. You can then use a rolling tool for screens or some type of knife to put the screen back inside the outside mold.

What are Wainscot Wall Coverings?

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by Greg Hansward

Wainscoting is a very popular choice when considering wall coatings, it has been popular for over one hundred years. Wainscoting is basically a type of paneling which is used to fix to the lower half of the walls inside your home. In addition to new shower curtains, and a few throw rugs, it’s an extremely inexpensive way to makeover your home.

Wainscotting can be made from a number of different materials, including ceramic tiles, marble, wood, or even modern materials such as plastic. Wainscoting is any paneling which starts at the baseboard and goes up to the chair rail. The most popular material for this is wood, especially tongue and groove boards.

Wainscoting can be virtually any height, but they are basically an extension of the baseboard. Baseboards commonly run up to eight inches high, most of these have a decorative top edge. Traditional wainscoting was popular in the 40’s.

Wainscoting traditionally went higher than it is popular today, these normally go as high as fifty four inches. This is not only used to decorate the area, but it is also used to protect the wall from damage. Taller wainscoting became popular in the middle of the nineteenth century. Traditional types use tongue and groove boards which are fixed to the wall with nails in order to hide the joints in the walls.

You can also install higher levels of wainscot in your home, these became very fashionable in the dining room during the 1900’s. The most popular material used for these during this time was material such as burlap or grass cloth. Most of these were rich vibrant colors.

Wainscot has quite a long spanning history, however it is still in fashion. There are some interesting changes that are making wainscoting more popular for use in modern homes.

Wainscoting are very cheap, it’s possible to cover a complete medium sized room for under $150. The look of wainscoting is very popular at the moment, it is very elegant and doesn’t cost a lot of money. Many newly built homes are starting to use wainscoting as part of their original decoration which could be why it is becoming so popular. It’s elegant and it references the past which makes your house look sophisticated. People still think of wainscoting as an older building material because it was typically used in older homes, this adds to the look and feel of your whole room.

Wainscoting is also very functional at protecting your walls, especially if you have young children or pets. Walls typically take quite a lot of battering. In the dining room for example children will hit the wall whenever they leave the table. In hallways and in their room they leave their handprints all over the walls. By wainscoting your wall you can protect your walls, and make it easy to clean if it does get dirty.

Wainscoting has been popular for over a hundred years, and it continues to remain in the spotlight of home design.

Bathroom Remodeling and Small Bathroom Design Tips

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by Illa Maden

Bathroom remodeling takes some careful thought when seeking small bathroom ideas.

List specific items you want in your new bathroom, and some of the problems you want to solve by finding small bathroom ideas.

Are you going to do a complete remodel of the entire space, or do you just want to do a partial bathroom remodel? A partial remodel can sometime bring great results.

The small bathroom ideas that prove useful will depend on whether it is used by all members of the household and it’s guests, as in the case of a main bath, or whether it is a private area such as a master bath.

A main bath may have to serve the needs of various age groups. If it is the only bath, it will serve the whole family as well as guests. If there are young children in the household, that needs to be taken into consideration.

While you want a a main bathroom to function well and be attractive, you may want to give a master bath a real touch of luxury by adding special materials not suited for heavy traffic, or amenities better suited for a couple such as a two person soaking bathtub

Consider your color choices in bathroom wall covering, flooring materials and surfacing. Using lighter colors will help to lighten up and expand the visual space. Tone on tone is a better choice for a small bathroom, and if you select neutral colors your bath will not get outdated anytime soon. An extra advantage to neutral colors is that it gives you more leeway with future changes in decor.

Choose light tones for your wall color, and a coordinating light color for your flooring. Larger more muted patterns are better for your flooring than small busy patterns. The less the better.

A glass shower door rather than a shower curtain adds visual space. A sliding door on a shower consumes less real space than one that swing out into the room.

Keep window treatments simple. A small bathroom is not the place for fluffy curtains. Blinds or bamboo shades will streamline the look of your window. Another option is to get a mylar covering from you home improvement store to cover the glass. This will allow privacy, as well as add a decor element. They are available in a variety of designs. Add a very simple valance in a coordinating color.

Dark colored cabinetry can seem to protrude from the wall and squeeze you in. If you are keeping existing cabinetry, sand it thoroughly and give it a new stain either in a light wood tone, or in a color. This is good even if your cabinets aren’t dark. A new color will add to the new feel and look of your bathroom. If installing new cabinets, keep them light and neutral.

Towel rods consume a lot of wall space. Replace them with towel rings which are more trendy and attractive.

There are also fixtures that are designed for smaller bathroom spaces. This too is an option for your small bathroom design. The fixtures themselves are designed at a smaller scale, freeing up space.

Another small bathroom idea, depending on the shape of your bathroom, is corner fixtures. In some specific situations, utilizing corner space is a good option. There are corner bathtubs, corner toilets, and corner pedestal sinks, as well as corner vanities.

When you have put all your small bathroom ideas together, created your design, and finished your bathroom remodel it is time to enjoy and be proud of your new space. Small spaces need to be kept up on a regular basis. A small mess in a small space takes on larger proportions in the mind’s eye. Take just five minutes a day to scan the room and quickly put out of sight those things that may have gotten left laying around.

Car Cleaning Tips

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by tim

It doesn’t have to be difficult to keep your car clean and tidy. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be proud to drive your squeaky-clean car around town.

Wash at home. Car washing is the only way for your car to get nice and shiny, so why not try washing it yourself, at home? With automated car washing, you can have the car cleaned while getting your nails done, but that will cost you. Park the car in a shaded area and then wash it down using a hose. Start with the roof, work your way down the sides, and then to the tires. Afterwards, scrub the car with a sponge dipped in water and mild liquid soap. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

Take advantage of car washes. You can drive to an automated car wash service to get your car cleaned up if you can’t be bothered to do it at home. It’s going to cost you, that’s for sure, so make sure to compare pros and cons before you go. The good thing about automated or drive-through car wash services is they make the experience of owning a car hassle-free. You no longer have to worry about bird droppings or liquid stains or anything of the sort - simply drive over to the nearest car wash, pay for the cleaning, and drive through.

Tidy inside out. The purpose of car cleaning is to prevent the car from wearing out, but there’s more to it than that. It is also about feeling good when you’re inside the car, not itchy and grimy because somebody didn’t clean the interior. First rule of thumb is to check the seats. Bits of food and other small particles tend to get stuck between the cushions, so check those areas often. Then, sweep the floor of small stones and dirt that found their way into the car. Just remember to clean out the seats first before doing the floor and not the other way around - otherwise, you’ll need to do the floor again.

Use car seat covers. One of the toughest things about owning a car is taking out the seats to have them washed. It’s a tedious job and it gets worse every time. In addition, it’s impossible not to dirty the seats, especially with children. You really need to start thinking about investing in seat covers. With seat covers, you simply remove the covers if you have to get them washed and cleaned up. The seats remain intact. These covers protect the seats from stains and dust and all sorts of fabric damage. It doesn’t get any better than this. Seat covers will change the way you see your car.

Keep a trash can nearby. A trash can inside the car will save you a lot of time and effort by significantly reducing the need for you to clean up every now and then. Some people have the habit of just dropping their garbage - a candy wrapper, a plastic bag, crumpled paper - anywhere if they can’t find a trash can nearby. Don’t let that “anywhere” be your car. Keep a small trash can behind either the driver’s seat or the passenger’s seat and save your car from smelling like the pits.

With each of these five tips, it should be no problem to keep your car clean. Remember, cleaning it a bit at a time, and often, will be a lot easier on you than leaving it for weeks (or months!) only to have to spend an entire weekend dealing with a large mess.

The Truth About Kitchen Remodeling - Things To Know

Monday, April 28th, 2008
by James Redder

The only thing that delays most people from having the kitchen of their dreams is the potential cost; the financial outlay is a concern for many homeowners. Probably so far it is the kitchen remodeling costs that have delayed your starting a project like this but things are about to change. Most of us can even picture our dream kitchen with a centre work area with all the appliances at the right level and marble worktops everywhere, but we know what we end up with will not have all these things.

We are all faced with having to carry out work on a budget but this is no reason why you can’t have something reasonably close to what you would ideally like. The best way to achieve your remodeling dream is to plan carefully looking at each stage to assess where money can be saved, and who knows, your ideal kitchen could be more of a reality than you thought.

As with any home remodeling projects, it is usually the hiring of professional help that increases the costs dramatically so this is the first area to look at. One of the ways to keep your kitchen remodeling costs in check is to plan the project well in advance and wherever possible do as much work yourself.

This idea will be of no use if you are not capable around the home and will probably be beyond your capabilities. It might save costs in theory, but there is no point in taking on a major improvement project if you are only going to fail and need to hire a kitchen fitter to finish it for you.

The easiest way to save money on your kitchen remodeling costs is to bypass the middle-man and deal with suppliers directly. Of course this does not include buying used equipment or quality second hand which often comes onto the market.

Look in your local newspapers or stores that advertise; even the internet because you may be pleasantly surprised at the amount of kitchen equipment around. If your kitchen remodeling costs are mounting then why not contact kitchen suppliers who can often sell unwanted kitchens in good condition for a fraction of their original cost.

Carefully acquiring your materials and appliances this way could mean that the kitchen you dreamt of is achievable, with nearly new or hardly used equipment. Your only main concern with your kitchen remodeling should be whether your ability to carry out the project; and only you will be able to answer that question.

Carpet - Still a Popular Choice for Flooring

Sunday, April 27th, 2008
by Larry Strauch

Carpet is among the top choices for floor covering (and often the least costly) in a lot of residential, remodeling and commercial applications. It’s available in many distinct styles, colors and textures and will bring warmth and beauty to any room in the home or work place. Some of the different types of carpet include Cable, Saxony, Texture, Frieze, Loop and Pattern. Each type of carpet is manufactured differently to give it unique characteristics.

Cable - Cable carpeting has a bold, chunky look to it because it is made with a “fat” yarn system. Because of this, it is very functional and durable especially in high traffic areas likes family rooms and dens. For a more modern look cable would be the style of choice.

Saxony - A Saxony carpet comprises a cut pile carpet with a smooth, level finish that has a luxurious, classy look. A Saxony style is ideal for an area such as a formal dining-room or living-room. Keep in mind that Saxony carpet will often reveal footprints and vacuum marks more than other types of carpet.

Texture - The most popular type of carpet is the Texture style. It’s popular because it fits any room in your house and it is easier to maintain because it doesn’t show vacuum marks and footprints. If you are looking for a great carpet for any room then a Textured carpet will definitely do the trick.

Frieze - If you are looking for a carpet that works well in high traffic areas, you may want to check out the Frieze style. Because its yarns are more tightly twisted, it doesn’t get crushed or matted and holds up better than other styles.

Loop - A carpet style that is extremely hard-wearing for your home, or work place, is known as a Loop style which is also called a Berber. This style is tends not to exhibit traffic marks like other styles. Because of this, it makes a great carpet for family rooms and kitchen areas. If you are looking for an extremely long-lasting carpet for your your work place, waiting room, reception area or lobby then check into a commercial level loop. Because of its lastingness, it would make an exceptional style for this type of area.

Pattern - A more formal type of carpet is known as a Pattern style. Because it can have bold or more subtle designs, it makes a great carpet for living rooms, dining rooms and master bedrooms. Pattern styles are constructed with a loop or cut pile or combination of both loop and cut pile.

There are many different styles, colors, textures and price points of carpet on the market today. Hopefully, this article has been able to at least narrow down your choices so that you can pick the right style for what your room requires.

Sunday, April 27th, 2008
by Febbe Wallace

There are so many outdoor lighting styles and designs to choose from. One of the best kinds to pick however is outdoor post lighting. What benefits can you get from this kind of lighting and what sets it apart from other kinds of lighting?

Benefits

Ambiance and Atmosphere - Just like any other style of outdoor lighting, outdoor post lighting fixtures are not just mere lighting fixtures. They are also great decorative elements even when not in use. Your preferred kind of outdoor post lighting can easily complement your home theme and provide an inviting ambiance when you want to spend some night time outdoors. More than anything else though, outdoor post lighting fixtures are also best for security reasons. Aside from serving as thematic decorations, your lamp posts can clearly illuminate pathways, walkways, driveways, pools, gardens and patios. This can help prevent either accidents or intrusions.

Downlighting

Downlight - What sets outdoor post lighting apart from other styles of lighting is its ability to downlight. This simply means that post lights can provide illumination from above. This is the reason why street lights are often really large variations of outdoor post lighting fixtures. They can provide clear illumination in areas that they are placed in. Outdoor post lighting for homes is perfect for night time fun and dining because you can easily see everything that is going on especially if you are preparing food and drinks.

The Sizes
