Contractors May Have Excellent Remodelling Suggestions

Saturday, April 26th, 2008
by Ken Morris

Even if a house is providing comfortable, dry shelter for the family, with some of the amenities that every family member needs, there are always some repairs and remodelling tasks that will make the house every more liveable. It might even be a good idea to talk with family members, even for a few minutes, to get some ideas about renovation and remodelling that will improve the house.

With a house that has been carefully maintained and updated over the years, it may be difficult to find extensive remodelling to be done. But every family member (and friend) will have an opinion about what can be added to or changed. These changes can range from those that just make things more pleasing to the eye (like new drapes, curtains, and carpet), to those that actually add some amenity that has been missing over the years.

Of course, among the many remodelling changes to be made in any home, no matter the age or condition, some of these ideas from family and friends will be excellent. Yet others may not fit with the owner’s ideas for the house or may not fit within the budget. For example, the owner may want to change the light fixtures to add more light to a room or change the way the room appears. A friend may suggest turning an unused space into a dining area or den, if this is something that the family has always desired.

Many homeowners change kitchen and bath cabinets at least once during the time they live in a house. Some make this change two or three times. While this can be an extensive project, probably best handled by a professional, the change in appearance and the addition of storage space may make the task well worth the time and money invested. Many contractors and remodelling companies suggest that, when cabinets are replaced in either room, a few dollars should be included for patching and/or refinishing walls, as well as adding a new coat of paint. Doing this at the time of cabinet installation is highly recommended and won’t add a lot to the cost.

Some contractors and rebuilders have found that once a homeowner completes a remodelling project, another idea is proposed, involving another area of the home. The remodelling fever can feed on itself. For example, the installation of new kitchen cabinets sometimes leads to replacement of the appliances, to make them fit more closely with the design and finish of the cabinets. In this case, it would be best if the flooring and walls under and behind these appliances were repaired/upgraded too.

Some homeowners feel that the first remodelling project they want to undertake doesn’t involve the inside of the home. They want to add a deck or a patio for general relaxation and for entertaining guests when weather permits. This often entails adding a sliding glass door in one of the outside walls, to make deck/patio access more convenient.

With any of these remodelling/renovation ideas, there will be a need for planning - especially financial planning. Homeowners should consider the cost of major projects carefully. In addition, they should try to include as much remodelling work in one project as possible, to avoid having to find finances again. It may be impossible to foresee every change or difficulty, but a little planning at first can make the remodelling project go much more smoothly.

Informative Plans Available To Help With Remodeling

Saturday, April 26th, 2008
by Jack Blacksmith

Most people would love to remodel and upgrade a home that they have lived in for a number of years, but in some cases the dreams have to be put on hold because of costs. Of course a good place to start is taking a good, long look at what is needed in the way of remodelling. But there are a number of sources that can be quite informative about the task of remodelling.

These sources, and a few well-placed questions, can point out some basic remodelling items that should make a great difference in the home’s appearance while holding the cost down to a reasonable level. When older homes need a lot of basic work, such as on the foundation, the plumbing or the electrical service, the costs of remodelling can be daunting. When renovation goes beyond new paint, new colors or new carpeting in a few rooms, it may be time to plan carefully and determine, down to the smallest detail what needs to be done to improve the home.

It is at this point that some homeowners abandon the idea of remodelling altogether. But upgrading and renovating a home can actually result in financial gain in the future. Making the correct choices when planning to remodel can be a wise financial decision.

Improvements to certain areas of the home can actually affect the overall value of the property more than other areas. For example, new kitchen countertops and fixtures may significantly increase the value, as will fixtures and floor coverings in the bathrooms. In addition, home renovation in the right areas can yield another benefit - the home could sell more quickly if it is ever put on the market. Potential buyers will usually be more anxious to purchase a home if they see that it won’t be necessary to remodel after the sale.

In addition to seeking out “deals” on remodelling contracts, a homeowner may want to consider doing some of the remodelling labor in order to save money. Of course, if the homeowner is not one who is comfortable with carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, it may be necessary to find a contractor who can do the work at reasonable cost. Some property owners find that a combination of do-it-yourself and professional work is a great way to accomplish remodelling goals. There are contractors who will insist that the work be completed entirely by professionals. Others may be agreeable to working with the homeowner who feels like doing some of the labor. In fact, some professionals will welcome the help of a homeowner who will do the “demolition” work of tearing down the interior walls to make way for new plaster or drywall, for example. This alone can save hundreds of dollars.

But when the removal of old walls or flooring is done, it may be time to step out of the way and allow the professionals to do what they do best. Installing kitchen cabinets, for instance, is generally not work for the inexperienced. Not only that, but the homeowner should make sure that good quality fixtures are used, along with the best floor and wall materials the budget will allow.

It may not be possible to buy the absolute best of everything when remodelling, but deciding to spend a few extra dollars is generally a good idea.

Tips for Repairing Sticky Windows and Doors

Saturday, April 26th, 2008
by Eric Slarkowski

If you have a stuck door or window you know the frustration of trying to pry it open. You don’t have to spend money on hiring a handyman to fix it. Here are some reasons why doors and windows get stuck and how to fix the problem.

Windows can become stuck a number of ways but the most common are expanding wood, paint or friction from moving parts. Especially when dealing with windows that may be subject to a lot of weather, such as basement windows, replacing them is not always easy. To fix a painted over joint or opening, cut the dried paint with a window zipper or a small knife. Slide the tool between the joined surfaces to “cut” the dried paint. From years of painting over existing paint, there could also be paint buildup that’s making the window stick. In this case use a paint scraper and remove the excess paint. You can also remove the lower window stop and sand and scrap the parts that come in contact with the window. If this doesn’t work or there is an excessive amount of paint buildup then remove the affected parts, sand, remove the paint and repaint. Reattach it to the window only when the paint is completely dry; if not, you’ll end up with the same problem.

Sometimes there is too much friction between the sash channels. You can use candle wax or powder to lubricate it or make it slide more smoothly. There could also be weather stripping that is warped causing the friction. In this case use a block of wood and flatten the metal using a hammer.

Doors can become stuck for the same reasons as windows plus some added possibilities. The most common problem is the door getting stuck in the door jamb. To fix the problem, take out the hinges, unscrew the hinge from the door, and place a piece of cardboard behind it. If this doesn’t fix the problem then the door may need to be modified. Determine how much of the door’s edge needs to be removed by marking it with a pencil then use a sander and plane to remove excess wood.

Due to constant wear, the screw attaching the hinge to the door may become loose. In this case, remove the door and remove the hinges. Now use wood dowels and putty to fill in the old holes. Make sure the filler is as flush as possible with the door. Once the door is completely dry, sand the area and drill pilot holes for attaching the hinge.

Sometimes adjusting the stop is easier than fixing a warped or ill fitting door. To do so, pry off the stop, close the door and mark where the stop should be. Nail the stop in place and your problem should be fixed.

Sticking windows and doors will always be frustrating but with these tips you should be able to determine why and how to alleviate the problem.

Tips and Tricks to Making Your Own Flavorful Salsa at Home

Saturday, April 26th, 2008
by Tony Bueler

There are salsa recipes which get passed on from generation to generation. Each successive generation keeps and preserves their own family ‘treasure’, and enjoy the flavors their ancestors had many years ago!

It’s very easy to drive to your favorite grocery store and pick up a jar of salsa off the shelf, but making it in your own kitchen can be quite rewarding! If you have had a productive garden this year, your stock of fresh peppers and tomatoes would be perfect for your home made salsa.

When you do this once, you may find that stocking up your pantry with homemade salsa will be a regular goal of yours! You only need a basic supply to make salsa, a simple recipe and the process of making the salsa.

Typical salsa ingredients are variations of the following: tomatoes, green pepper, Jalapeno, red chili pepper, garlic salt or powder, onion, cilantro, lemon juice. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

And salsa is full of antioxidants and vitamins that are known to keep your body stay healthy!

Modify the ingredients to your taste - Adding more jalapenos and other peppers will make for a hotter and spicier salsa. Alternatively, for a milder salsa, reduce the number of peppers and add more tomatoes.

The full flavor and strength of spices deteriorate over time so make sure to use fresh spices. And always use fresh oils. Like spices, oils lose their flavor over time and some can go rancid if kept too long.

When making salsa in your kitchen, be sure to put on a clean pair of rubber gloves to avoid skin irritation from the chili peppers. And keep the gloves from your face when handling hot peppers.

When making and preserving your homemade salsa, you will need all the supplies that you typically need when you are preserving tomatoes. You will need canning jars, lids and bands, a hot water bath canner, a large pot to cook the salsa, strainer, jar lifter, large bowl, and the ingredients from your recipe. Thoroughly wash all the utensils you will be using and boil the jars and bands. Warm the lids but don’t boil them. Leave the jars and the lids in the hot water up until the time you are ready to fill them.

You can also store them in your freezer. After making a large batch simply divide it into small containers and freeze them. You’ll be able to enjoy fresh-tasting salsa year round!

The Vertical Wheel Chair Lift: Knowing the Right Information

Friday, April 25th, 2008
by Febbe Wallace

Wheel chairs are one of the many inventions that the demands of this modern world can’t do without. Imagine what life would be like for the mobile-challenged without the aid of this equipment. Wheel chairs started out as manual mobility devices and have been upgraded to battery charged or electrically powered devices. Lifts were then designed to glide through staircases so that users don’t need helpers to carry them. Today, these devices have been made so much easier to use. The vertical wheel chair lift is now being used in virtually every kind of building application. Whether you are in the home, office or simply visiting a place, everyone deserves to have easy access and comfort while traveling.

What is a vertical wheel chair lift?

This is simply a platform with the ability to vertically lift a wheel chair or an individual from a ground position to a more elevated level. It resembles an elevator and is in fact considered a home elevator to most users.

What are the kinds of vertical wheel chair lifts?

There are what you call electric vertical wheel chair lifts and hydraulic vertical lifts. An electric vertical wheel chair lift requires electric power while a hydraulic one does not-prices may therefore differ; so choose wisely according to your specific needs.

There are various vertical wheel chair lift models. There is the usual elevator-style lift that is fitted within four walls (minor renovation may therefore be needed in your home). Then there is the enclosed model, which has a platform that automatically encloses with four walls when the wheelchair is on it and ready to be lifted. Other models are smaller in size, have no ceiling, or have only platforms to raise the wheelchair to shorter levels such as when elevating to get into a vehicle or single floor step. Again, costs may differ because of the varying structures, but remember, there are some features you may or may not need.

Where can I use vertical wheel chair lifts?

There is more than one answer to this question. The vertical wheel chair lift is being used everywhere from homes, auditoriums, hospitals, offices to old buildings.

Residential Homes - Homes with more than 2 stories can definitely benefit from a vertical wheel chair lift for easy access to the top floor.

Universities and Schools - Auditoriums, which are usually found in schools and universities, are known to have many steps and so can be very difficult for students who are physically challenged. A smaller sized vertical wheel chair lift would be appropriate for these types of setting.

Establishments - Older buildings often do not have elevators that are as spacious as the modern ones. Therefore wheelchairs usually cannot fit into their elevators. Older establishments can easily install a vertical wheel chair lift.

What features should I look for?

Safety - A good vertical wheel chair lift should have an anti-slip platform for maximum safety, especially if the area is busy or outdoors. It should be low enough for wheelchairs to easily roll on and off of it and have safety railings.

Guidelines for Mortgage Refinancing

Friday, April 25th, 2008
by Andrew McAllister

Due to the current state of the economy and home foreclosures reaching alarming numbers, the time has come to consider refinancing on your home mortgage loan. The Internet has made it easier and more convenient to compare multiple refinance companies and locate the agency with the best potential for helping you. Research is imperative to ensuring you are getting what you need and only what you need.

In the past, the only way to research mortgage refinancing was to do the legwork yourself. This required making endless phone calls and setting up meetings with various refinancing experts for a one-on-one consultation. Again the Internet has come to the rescue. Researching refinance companies for the best rates is as easy as a few clicks of your mouse. Many websites offer to do the comparison-shopping for you.

One such company, LendingTree.com, will use the information you enter on their website to compare up to four potential refinance companies, making the entire process much more convenient for you. Having several options in one place makes comparison shopping for your online mortgage refinance much easier.

By using a free online mortgage calculator you can not only find out how much you are currently paying in taxes and interest but also easily compare various refinance options to find out how much you will save should you choose one option over another.

The standard refinance company will run a credit check to enable them to assess your financial situation and credit worthiness. You are entitled to one free copy of your credit report annually. Use this benefit to be aware of potential negative reports that the underwriters at the refinance company will see and question, before they see it. Just because you are considering online mortgage refinancing does not change the rules. Your credit report always plays an integral part in any refinancing endeavor.

Before choosing a mortgage refinance company, discuss the situation with friends and family who have already been through a home refinancing process. Their experiences may provide valuable insight into the company best suited to you. Many companies are competing for your business. Some are bound to be non-reputable agencies. Let common sense prevail. Well-established companies have a proven track record and are the best choice based on their stability. Smaller lenders should not be overlooked because they may be able to offer more personalized services than larger agencies.

Searching online for mortgage refinancing can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Using the tools that are available can simplify the process considerably. Don’t take anything for granted. Read everything including all the details. Question what you do not understand and be sure to ask for clarification before signing on the dotted line.

Remember: Just because you’re asking for help doesn’t make you stupid, getting yourself stuck with a bad mortgage refinance loan does!

Tips for Updating Any Kitchen

Thursday, April 24th, 2008
by Vince Paxton

When it is time to spruce up your kitchen, there are many factors that you will need to consider. A kitchen gets a lot of use each and every day. You need your kitchen to become a favorite room in your home—one in which family and friends can gather when you entertain. Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny to grand, so no matter what kind of kitchen you have, here are some tips for making the most out of your space.

Update the Appliances: As with anything you do, your work is only as good as the tools you use. That is so true even in the kitchen. You may spend a fortune to reface kitchen cabinets, but if it’s not done well, you’ll always notice the problems. An old oven may work okay, but how many times has it proved unreliable when a cake comes out uneven or it burns cookies too fast? In addition, old appliances are not as energy efficient as newer kitchen appliances and they can really outdate your space. When you want to vamp up your kitchen space, consider spending a bit of money and updating your appliances first. Stainless steel appliances are very sleek and stylish and almost every manufacturer makes a line. If you are on a tight budget, then take a look at what you use the most and work from there. Your refrigerator and microwave may be the first ones that you will want to replace.

Paint and Texture: Wallpaper is mostly out. If you have old and worn wallpaper or ugly paint, then it is time to spruce up your kitchen walls. Texturing is quite popular and will give your home a trendy look in no time. In many cases, you can learn how to texture a wall yourself and you will never have to call in a professional. Also, look at the choice in paint colors. Choose colors that you can live with and that you love. Remember the rule with paint in the kitchen, though. This is a high traffic area, so go with paint that is at least eggshell or semi gloss sheen. This will make the walls easier to wipe clean when necessary.

Floors and Countertops: The next two things that will outdate your kitchen are floors and counters. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to update. You can get great looking laminate for both places. If you spend a little more look at tile for the floors. Many homeowners love the look and durability of butcher block counters, too.

Is a Car Valet Service for You?

Thursday, April 24th, 2008
by Steve James

One of Your Most Expensive Assets

A car valet technician is a professional trained in the art and science of automobile service and maintenance. Just as a physician knows much more about our body and the proper way to take care of it, a car valet knows much more about your car, what it needs and the proper method to keep it going for a long time to come. Just like we need frequent visits to the doctor for period checkups, our cars need to make regular visits to a car valet service for car grooming.

The Professional Service

Secondly, car valets have a lot of experience with cars and can almost know where things can go wrong. Therefore, they can take preventive care as well as redemptive care, which can cut costs in the end. People sometimes hesitate to go for professional help assuming that the costs might be prohibitively high. However, the actual truth is that professional services are only marginally higher than regular service and it in fact proves more economical in the long run.

A local mechanic might offer a quick fix for a couple of dollars. It might also seem to take care of the problem for the time being. Nevertheless, it might adversely affect the health of your car and cause other problems that would need more costly repairs on a later date. Therefore, it is always wise to go in for a professional car valet service to regularly maintain your car.

The Services Offered

The best way to protect the surface of paint on the car is to regularly apply a coat of wax. Waxing provides comprehensive protection to the paint surface and prevents various airborne contaminants from reaching the paint and starting a chemical reaction. Waxing also lends a glossy effect to the car that makes it look stunningly beautiful. It is a statistical fact that a car that looks beautiful resells for a higher price than a car that only has a good engine but no looks. Protecting the paintwork significantly increases its resale value.

A rofessional car grooming service has tremendous benefits and is a wise choice when it comes to deciding the proper upkeep of your car. It not only is economical, but also helps you save a lot of money in the long run by taking preventive measures that guarantee your car’s longevity. To ensure that your car keeps good health and provides you with long years of trouble free service, make sure that you are in constant touch with a good car valet service.
