Why Identity Theft Insurance Isn’t Really That Helpful

Personal identity theft has become a lot more newsworthy lately. Some experts say that it’s receiving much more attention than it should. It has become so common in the news that there is now an insurance to cover it called personal identity insurance.

What Personal Identity Theft Insurance Covers

The insurance itself generally costs about $25 to $50 per year and covers from $15,000 to $25,000 of costs including lost wages from time to taken off from your job to deal with the fraud problem. Coverage for job loss is usually capped at $500 per week for a maximum of four weeks. This insurance may also cover some legal fees.

Some insurance may also cover special mailing charges to mail fraud affidavits to the correct people. Fees for credit cards and loans that were applied for and rejected due to false information are at least partially covered.

Any long distance charges to banks etc. to discuss the fraud can also be covered.

This may seem like a good deal for the money but keep in mind a few things. Identity theft is very unlikely. The chances of being victimized are only about 0.35%. Chances are it will never happen to you.

The coverage may seem adequate but when actually broken down, parts of it aren’t very useful. For example, the lost wage item sounds good but at $500 a week, it’s not enough to cover what many people would be making. As well it doesn’t consider that many people are unable to take time off from work.

Personal identity theft coverage does not actually fix your credit or criminal record, which is what auto or home owner’s insurance would do. Instead it only helps to pay for the expenses associated with fixing it yourself. Generally, these expenses do not warrant the cost to pay for this policy, as with most cases they do not exceed $1,000.

Identity theft is a huge problem in our society today. This is a problem that is growing every year and it can have the effect of nearly destroying peoples lives. If a person is affected by this problem they need to know how to report identity theft. Also, a person should remember that this is a problem that will never be solved unless they report identity theft ” keeping silent will only hurt yourself and future victims of this crime.

Notify the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can do this via their toll-free phone number 877-IDTHEFT or via their website form at their site. This should be one of the first calls you make as the FTC can help you through the entire process.

Let your bank and credit card companies know. Close all your accounts and credit cards but remember to let the financial companies know what’s happening. They will appreciate knowing as soon as possible and will be more willing to help protect you.

Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA). By letting the SSA know that your social security number has been compromised they can evaluate if you qualify for a new number and make sure that your earnings reports are still correct.

If the theft has any potential ties to terrorism or buying or selling social security numbers, make sure you contact the Office of the Inspector General.

Contacting your credit reporting agencies is also a must. They can watch for further activity on your reports and by informing them, you are more likely to recover from this problem with your credit still intact.

You can make your position more complicated if you don’t let the right people know. The sooner you can report identity theft, the sooner the authorities have of trying to catch the person or people responsible. This could help future victims.

As with any job interview, you should be well prepared, present yourself effectively, and make sure you leave a pretty good impression on your interviewer. However, there are some key points that you have to remember if you want to increase your chances of landing a legal assistant position. Below are some helpful tips for a successful interview.

Do your homework Before your interview, it is important that you do some research about the organization and gather information on the company’s background, performances and future plans. Find out all that you can about the company through personal contacts, written materials, or the internet. It is also best to know the biographies, accomplishments and legal practices of the attorneys that you might be working with in the future. During the interview, you should ask relevant questions to show your interviewer that you have indeed done sufficient research about the company. Also, make sure you find out what kind of law the company is specializing in. For example, if the position of legal assistant is for real estate law, you should have some knowledge about closings and real estate law.

Refresh your memory Most people tend to forget certain terminologies over time. Identity theft is a major problem in this day and age. It hurts the creditors that have money owing to them as well as the people whose identities are stolen. Even the general public looses because of the extra fees and higher interest rates charged by the companies for money they loose. It’s difficult to determine its origin but it’s really just another form of thievery and that’s been around forever.

Is Identity Theft Creative or Just Stealing?

However a person chooses to look at identity theft, it can be reduced to its simplest form. In its simplest form identity theft is simply stealing. The origin of identity theft can be traced before the times of the internet. A popular movie was recently made called Catch Me If You Can. This movie was a dramatization of a conmans life. He made his living by presenting himself as something he wasnt. In this particular movie the man presented himself as a person that was of various professions (many times to commit check fraud).

This movie helps to demonstrate the origin of identity theft. This form of thievery eventually developed into modern-day identity theft. Conmen and thieves have simply become better at it. Today, unscrupulous people are able to use various sources (the internet and e-mail for one) to essentially impersonate not a profession, but an individual.

One of these ways this is done is by e-mail. An e-mail containing a virus can be sent to you to gather your personal information from your computer. The best way to stop this is by not opening e-mails if you don’t recognize the sender. You need to read the information provided in the subject line and who has sent it to you.

Sometimes things can be misspelled or be obvious spam. Never open a message that you know to be spam. Keeping you virus program updated and running regularly will also help you with these unwanted messages.

Identity thieves can also do something as easy as checking the garbage that you throw out. It’s important to never throw out papers that have information on it such as social security numbers, birth dates, account numbers or any other information that pertains to identity.

It doesn’t really matter when identity theft originated. What is most important is that as individuals, we are careful with our personal information to protect ourselves against this offense.

Although it is a massive number, the estimate is that approximately ten million people will be affected by identity theft this year. Given that information is such an important part of our society these days, it is not a complete surprise. Most people will have personal details listed on government and business databases. They will shop online or via the telephone. Information they have given out will be sent out in letters that may go astray. For unscrupulous people, many of these instances are an ideal opportunity to take advantage of people that don’t look after their personal details. This article will give you six ways that you can do this and prevent identity theft happening to you.

If you are throwing out any mail or documents, check that they do not have any of your personal details on them. A common form of acquiring identity is to go through someones trash looking for this type of information. This could include any government letters, credit card statements, utility bills or receipts. You should shred these type of documents before throwing them away. If you don’t have a shredder then tear them up into many pieces.

Be prompt about removing mail from the mail box. Again, thieves will look in the mail box and get personal documents this way. If you are going on vacation or will be away from your home you could ask the postal service to hold your mail for that period or redirect it to someone you trust. You could even get a PO Box or locking mail box for increased security but this would take time to get your mail each day.

Social security numbers are a principal way in which thieves will steal your identity. Keep your Social security number in a safe place, like a safe or such like. You don’t need to carry it on you and should be wary about who you give the number out to.

Again, be careful with receipts that your get in your daily dealings. Things like ATM or bank statements or credit card receipts can hold important information that can be used against you. Always take them with you and shred at a later date if you don’t want them.

Avoid giving out any information to unsolicited telephone callers. Even if the call sounds legitimate and the information asked for does not seem that important, don’t comply. Rather, find out who the person is, the company they represent and the reason for the call. Then call back the company on a number that you know is valid. You can ask about the person or the reason for requesting the information. If you are satisfied with the response then give the information up.

Get off of junk mail lists. Ask to be removed from the mailing list of any junk mail or mail that you don’t feel benefits you in any way. This can save you a lot of work opening and throwing mail away and prevent any potential identity theft problems occurring.

Although these suggestions might seem straight forward and you may do some of them already, it is important to stay vigilant. Many people can become careless when nothing happens to them. Try to turn these suggestions into habits that you perform without thinking so that you never let your guard down. Hopefully this will prevent identity theft ever happening to you.
