The hurdles to weight loss and untold truth of weight loss diet

April 29th, 2008
by D.Newman

Weight loss diet is all about creating healthy eating habits. There is nothing called quick weight loss diet as weight lost slowly is healthy and fat loss is best achieved when weight is lost slowly. Imagine how did you gain weight? Did you gain it overnight? Certainly not, do not aim to lose it overnight also.

The first thing that needs a change is unreachable goals, they need to be replaced with real ones. Weight loss becomes extremely difficult when you feel like you are depriving yourself. This becomes a struggling experience instead of being an exciting and positive experience. This mental aspect becomes more important because, healthy weight loss is more an integral approach of body and mind than being merely physical.

Weight loss is recommended for those who weight more than the recommended guidelines. It is more like ’slow and steady wins the race’. Rather than dropping size by tomorrow, setting a goal of 1 to 2 pound per week is more realistic and achievable. The quick fix or short term approach has been the hallmark of weight loss programs. Yet, weight loss being a health and fitness issue and more appropriately a lifestyle issue, it is quite manageable if handled right.

The difficult part is it adds to person’s stress level and with sleep deprivation it becomes even harder. One should be really motivated, disciplined, patient with a proper weight loss plan in and. One must follow set daily or weekly goals while being honest to oneself.

The untold secret of weight loss diet

Weight loss dieting is a multibillion dollar industry in the United States, but it doesn’t work for most people. The story remains the same — lose 20 pounds, gain back 30. Diets that make the promise of rapid weight loss do not provide the skills to maintain your weight loss. Lifestyle changes provide the opportunity to lose weight in a healthy manner and to keep ii off forever. Dieting has hazards that are rarely pointed out. Yo-yo dieting is particularly dangerous and ineffective, because it decreases the metabolism , leading to an immediate weight gain once the caloric restrictions are eased.

True, dieting alone can help you lose weight. Cutting 250 calories from your daily diet can help you lose about half a pound a week: 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of fat. Diets that promise fast weight loss with hardly any effort don’t give you the skills you need to maintain your weight loss; in some cases, these quick fix weight loss routines can even be seriously detrimental to your health. When it comes to losing weight, most weight loss experts will tell you that it is not about dieting. Dieting requires present-moment frustration and self-denial with little immediate reward.

Getting Grateful

April 29th, 2008
by Kenrick Cleveland

“It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” -Wallace D. Wattles, The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” -Melodie Beattie

Gratitude is an incredibly valuable and powerful emotion to intentionally express because when we are grateful, we attract more to be grateful for.

I mention gratitude at the end of each of my Persuasion Factor calls and my Elite Coaching Club because gratitude should be our constant companion not just a Thanksgiving Day foot note or brief prayer on Sunday. It should permeate all of our interactions.

Experiencing gratitude does not have to be limited to when someone gives you a gift or does you a favor. True gratitude is about looking deeply at our lives and understanding how truly lucky we are to be alive at this moment in time.

Every night and every morning I think of gratitude. I have a huge list, as do all of us, of things I am so truly thankful for: family, colleagues, students, friends, health, financial success, employees. I am thankful when it rains because I know that the Pacific Northwest is lush and green as a result of this rain. I am grateful when it’s sunny, because it really rains a lot here.

I’m grateful for simple things and complicated things. And throughout my day, I stop to consider other people’s situations, whether they be more challenging or easier than mine, and I am grateful for the struggles I’ve had to endure, and grateful for the things I accomplish with ease, both, because these are the things that have made me what I am and brought me to this point in life.

There are going to be times when being grateful isn’t easy — times that are trying or difficult. Maybe your health is bad. Your body isn’t working the way it should. Instead of cursing it for what it can’t do, be grateful for what it can.

There’s an old Irish proverb that says, ‘Count your joys instead of your woes; count your friends instead of your foes.’ This is beautiful. In my opinion, the key is all in what we choose to focus on.

As you begin to take notice of all that is good in your life, this gratitude will turn your life around.

History of Vodou - Politics of Slavery In Vodou History

April 29th, 2008
by Daniel Casey

Voodoo, or vodou(n) as the Haitians spell it, is the Dahomey word for spirit. Any spirit that can be found throughout nature is vodou. Voodoo is a derivative of the world’s oldest known religions which have been around in Africa since the beginning of human civilization. Some estimate these civilizations and religions to be over 10,000 years old.

Vodou came from the peoples of the Kongo, as well as the Central African regions, including Bakongo and the Yoruba of Nigeria. However, Vodou originates mainly from the western nations of Africa, and primarily from the ancient kingdom of Dahomey, which is now present day Benin.

Vodou can be considered a religion shaped more by the evolution of its practicioners than as a static dogma. Therefore, it’s necessary to consider the evolvement of Vodou religion from within the framework of its history - politically and socially.

Freely borrowing from other traditions in order to keep its ancient African beliefs alive, Vodou is truly a religion of tolerance. Haitian vodou is a clear example of this.

Haitian Vodou

Haitian Vodou is an initiatory tradition that is practiced by 90% of the population of Haiti - the poor and poor working class. Today, the nation of Haiti’s population is made up of people whose ancestors were brought over as slaves from various African Tribes. The major elements of Haitian Vodou religion come from these old African religions that the slaves brought with them, combined with the Catholicism Haiti’s French occupation forced upon them.

Vodou offers a system of beliefs that provides Haitians both meaning and solace, qualities that are in short supply in a country with no public schools, few working sewers, no public transportation, little industry, and no good roads. Haitian vodou is also highly eclectic: in an effort to recreate their religious culture in Haiti, African slaves expropriated a huge repertory of influences, including bits and pieces from the indigenous Taino Indians, from Roman Catholicism, Freemasonry and European mysticism.

Vodou, being outlawed within Slavery, had to find a mask if it were to survive oppressive ideologies from Europe. In fact many of the Lwa are known to be of pale skin as opposed to African in their Descent.

These roots are quite evident in Haitian Vodou today. Because Vodou has had such influence on Haitian art and music, even Haitians who are NOT Vodou initiates and do not serve any particular lwa hold widespread respect for the tradition of Vodou.

Haitian art, for example, absorbs and interprets visual culture so masterfully because of its roots in Vodou - a religion and way of life that was born and survived due to its history of accommodation and inclusion.

New Orleans Vodou | Hoodoo Voodoo

Haitian vodou crossed over to the United States as early as the 1800s, but surfaced mainly in New Orleans. One practitioner that popularized it in the area was the famed Vodou Queen Marie Laveau, but other forms of vodou existed in the United States dating before the 1776 revolution.

Hoodoo and Voodoo are both practiced in Louisiana and have many things in common. However, there are differences between the two. Voodoo is a religion, and Hoodoo is an African American system of folk magickal practice that has typically been handed down from generation to generation. HOODOO, though not a religion, is the folk magic of the common people in West Africa, just as it is in the diaspora today. From so-called love potions, to taking vegenace upon an enemy, Hoodoo is largely what has survived the religious persecution of the Africans enslaved in the New World.

Voodoo is a serious religion with various rituals, spells, and practices that take believers into the spiritual and transcendental world. For reasons perhaps unknown, Vodou praticioners often DO experience the exact outcome or impact Vodou spells and ceremonies were meant to bring about. Spiritual cleansings, healings and insight, communicating with passed loved ones - For those who practice and believe in the power, Voodoo is dominant.

Babysitter Search Options

April 29th, 2008
by Rashel Dan

You may be on the verge of a babysitter search. The question is, do you have any idea where you can even find good sitters? There are a couple of good places where you could start looking for a sitter. Here are some of them:

Neighborhood

Start in your community. Some of your teen neighbors may be willing to baby sit for you. You could also put up an ad on your front lawn and wait for community members to apply. Another way would be to personally ask your neighbors if they know of any good sitters. Many parents swear that this is by far still the best way to get a good sitter. Your neighbor can vouch for the ability and character of your sitter. Then again, even neighbors can make mistakes. They may not be fully aware of a sitter’s entire background or history.

Schools

Colleges and high schools are also good source of potential sitters. Many students on these levels need some extra cash for school needs and extra expenses. Advertising in a few online or offline school boards would guarantee that you would have more than a handful of prospects.

Sitters from schools are also least likely to have any criminal records. Otherwise they wouldn’t be in school. Nonetheless, you should still carefully screen applicants from schools to determine their character and ability.

Agencies

Babysitting Agencies - Your babysitter search can also begin in agencies. Many agencies have been around for decades. They would therefore have a lot of experience in gathering good sitters. Agencies also provide you with the option of stay in or stay out sitters. They usually conduct background investigations on their applicants to ensure that you get a good sitter. Agencies however typically cost a lot. This is especially if you need to get a stay in sitter from another region or country. You may have to spend a thousand dollars or more to get a good sitter.

Advertisements

The Yellow Pages - People who wish to offer their services typically advertise. You can look through newspapers, yellow pages and even online job posts to find a baby sitter in your area. You would be hiring a virtual stranger though. This means that if you get a sitter through an advertisement, you would have to spend a great amount of time interviewing, screening and scrutinizing your prospects. You can never be too careful when it comes to the safety of your kids.

Online Services

Online services are similar to agencies. They have databases of sitter prospects that you can choose from. Many modern online services however charge cheaper. For a monthly or yearly membership fee, you can get a stay in or stay out sitter of your choice. These services also typically conduct background checks on potential sitters and let parents personally interview prospects. You also benefit from a number of parent resources that can give you advice on dealing with sitters.

These are the basic starting points for your babysitter search. You can choose the method that is most convenient for you. You should however always put your child’s safety and welfare first. Pick the option where you are most certain to get a reliable sitter.

Online Art Gallery - An Aspiring Artist’s Lifeline

April 29th, 2008
by Kathy Austin

For a upcoming artist, finding an Art Gallery to show his creations was a pipe dream unless he or she was familiar in the art circles, had a rich patron who could give him a fillip or was a genius. But even geniuses in the field of the fine arts are not discovered overnight and come into their own rights after a relatively very long spell, and some after their times. To become familiar, the budding artist should have started somewhere and there lies many a woeful tale of a vicious circle.

This was compounded by the fact that art is a matter of personal likes and dislikes. The beauty of a piece of art is only in the eyes of the beholder. As such an upcoming artist needed someone to push him along, a Godfather, so to say. Or he had to be a genius, but the history of art has a long list of those geniuses for whom recognition came late. So, even if the new artist did find a small gallery, in some Godforsaken alley or bye lane, it was not his to decide whether it was worth hanging on above ones’ mantelpiece.

This scenario underwent a drastic transformation with the arrival of computers and the advanced programs that ran them and ran on them. Almost anything was possible on the computer and it came to the aid of the budding artist in the form of the “Online Art Gallery”. Not only did the computer change the way art was displayed and sold, it even changed the concept of art. Digital art was added to the existing forms and Abstract art became more abstract and less understandable except to the enlightened few. Computers also spawned more artists.

The Online Art Gallery set about making changes in the fortunes of these artists. These galleries could feature just about any aspect of the fine arts. All an upcoming artist had to do was to create a portfolio of his works and upload the same to one of these galleries. Even the traditional galleries now put up information on their paintings, sculpting and other works on online art galleries. Paintings of old masters, paintings of aspiring artists, sculpting, digital art, photographs and videos - all of them can be displayed in an online art gallery.

An aspiring artist can use the Internet to display his wares. He can create his own web site and put on show all of his creations. Being his own web, site he has total control over it and it is left to his whims and fancies as to what he wants to exhibit and what he does not want to. But this will involve either building the web site himself, provided he has the technical know how to do it or getting a professional web designer to build one for him to his requirements. An initial investment of some sort is essentially required.

An alternative arrangement would be to subscribe and join any one of the many online galleries that offer their services on the Internet. There are galleries that host ones paintings or other such works free of charge. These free sites have limited facilities and offer space for a limited period of time. Others charge a fee depending on the nature of the services offered and the popularity of the site, ranging from a few dollars to a few hundreds. Once uploaded, they are there for the world to view.

An Online Art Gallery permits the addition and deletion of paintings, a statement from the artist, details of the artist and his other works and contact details. Some of these galleries even handle the sale of an artist’s painting and take a commission on the proceeds of the deal.

An online art gallery is thus a boon to an aspiring artist. He gets the required exposure, in fact world wide exposure, and the opportunity to sell them online. All he has to do is paint the next Mona Lisa.

The Connection Between Acid Reflux And Pregnancy

April 29th, 2008
by Richal Peyton

Pregnancy can cause a lot of body changes. In most cases, these changes may cause some discomfort and sometimes certain health conditions. One of the health conditions that women may develop due to pregnancy is acid reflux. Let’s talk about acid reflux and pregnancy.

Is Acid Reflux Normal During Pregnancy?

Acid reflux is only common and expected in pregnant women. In fact, 1 in 4 pregnant women experience symptoms associated with acid reflux, such as heartburn, all throughout their pregnancy. The condition is also considered a pregnancy side effect and affects a third of all pregnant women. The good news is, acid reflux normally goes away after pregnancy. If this doesn’t happen in your case though, there is always treatment available after proper diagnosis.

Why Do Pregnant Women Have Acid Reflux?

There can be several reasons acid reflux and pregnancy often go together. The three main reasons for acid reflux during pregnancy are hormones, weight gain and pressure.

- Changes in Hormones - in a pregnant woman’s body tend to rise dramatically. When this happens, more acid is produced in the stomach, causing acid reflux. The hormones estrogen and progesterone may cause constipation and slower digestion, which in turn may worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. Furthermore, these hormones may also weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easy for stomach acid to enter the esophagus.

- Added Weight -caused by pregnancy can contribute to hiatial hernias, a condition in which a part of the stomach extends beyond the diaphragm. As a result, acid tends to reach the esophagus.

- Stomach Pressure - builds inside the stomach as the baby grows. As a result, food is sometimes pushed through the diaphragm along with stomach acid. Thus, acid reflux occurs.

What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux In Pregnant Women?

Vomiting and Nausea - During the first trimester of pregnancy, women often feel like vomiting or nauseated. For other women, these symptoms can go on for up to 9 months. These symptoms are said to be mainly caused by the rise of hormone levels in the pregnant woman’s body. Those with worse cases of acid reflux may develop malnutrition. Pregnant women who already had acid reflux before pregnancy are more likely to have worse cases of reflux compared to those who never had the condition before.

What Are Available Treatments?

H2 Blockers and Antacids - If drugs are necessary, a doctor may prescribe antacids and H2 blockers. These medications mainly act to neutralize acid levels in the stomach and reduce discomfort. However, there are other kinds of treatment that can be applied during pregnancy. These include lifestyle changes such as having a special diet, elevating the head while sleeping, and staying fit.

Considerations - Treatment for acid reflux during pregnancy is often more challenging because most medications are not recommended to pregnant women. The welfare of both the mother and unborn child is often the focus when doctors recommend medication. Furthermore, drug interaction may occur if the pregnant woman is already taking other drugs. Treatment for acid reflux and pregnancy is either a good or bad combination. This is why you should always speak with your doctor first for the most suitable treatment for you.
